MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. AV. G. Kiddell, S.M.) ALLEGATIONS OF THEFT.
AGAINST WAREHOUSE EMPLOYEES. The Magistrate's Court sat at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, and the charge s-heet was disposed of within the hour. Four young men appeared before the Court on charges of thefts from city warehouses. Allan Lee was charged with having stolen a case of Van Houten's cocoa, valued at J27 10s., from tho warehouse of his employers, Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co., in which firm he held the position of bonded storeman. Ernest Charles Gregory, an under-store-man employed by Messrs. A. S. Paterson and Co., was charged with having, at various stated times, stolen severally a bag of sugar, valued at 10s. 6d.; a case of falmon, valued at £2 25.; a bag of S'ligar, valued at 10s. 6d.; a bag of sugar, valued at 10s. 6d.; and a case of tongiits, valued at £2 25.; all the property of his employers. BeTtio Smith, a storekeeper, was charged with having severally stolen, at various stated times, a bag of sugar, valued at 10s. Gd.; a case of salmon, valued at ,£2 25.; a bag of s.ugar. valued at 10s. Gd,; a bag of sugar, valued at 10s. Gd.; a case of tongues, valued at ,£2 2s:; all the propertv of Messrs. A. S. Palerson and Co.- The same accused was - also charged-with having received from Alfred Smith, at various times between April 1, 1911, and July 8. 1911, the following articles, which lie is alleged to have known were dishonestly obtained. from Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co.;— 22 bases of tobacco. .12 boxes of cigarette; 11 boxes' of candles: II cases of cocoa, 2 casts of salmon, and one case of canned fruit, of a total value of .£123 17,-'. . Alfred .Smith, a carricr occasionally employed by Lee, was charged with tho theft of a case of Van Houten's cocoa, valued at Jul 10s.", and with having received from Allan Lee various goods of a total value of .£l2O 7s. which, it is alleged, he knew were dishonestly obtained from Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co.
The four accused were formally charßed, ami remanded till July 2G, being allowed their liberty upon substantial bail being forthcoming. Messrs. Herdman and ICirkcaldie have been briefed for the defence of tho two Smiths.
OTHER CASES. Charles Tyrell was charged with drunkenness and remanded till July 2'j, for curative treatment. On a charge of drunkenness Michael Driscoll, who pleaded guilty, was fined 205., with the option of seven days' imprisonment. Francis William Tier, for assaulting Michael Driscoll, was fined .£3, in default 11 days' imprisonment. Joseph M'Millan, charged with having deserted his wile ot Sydney, was remanded till July 28.
