BABY SHOW. KXHIBITOItS' DAT —.£2(10 WOIJTH OF SAMPLES, In a day of many - events—Saturday next—a feature which is creating moro than passing interest is the baby show, which i? to tnko place in the Stadium during tho afternoon. 'Wellington .bears an enviable reputation for the beauty of its babies, and from the inquiries made by mothers aud their envoys, it is absolutely certain that there will be a largo entry. Parents are reminded that entries close with Mr: I'. Allen, Kcrnot's Building, Customhouse Quay, at n p.m. to-morrow. The first prize will be. a very handsomo walnut jewel-case (handsomely upholstered with tinted silk, and containing a,series of drawers, which, in turn, are protected by dainty doors of bevelled crystal glass) and a gold medal. This prize will be awarded to the best baby between one and three years old. There will also be second aud third prizes. Another contest will be for babies froni one week to twelve months' old. in which section three valuable prizes will be awarded. It. must be understood clearly that the public is to bo the judge. Evoryono on entering will be given a card, on which they will inscribe the number of the baby for which they intend to vote, and having selected their favourite they must drop the card into a box provided for the purpose. Tho same system of judging will obtain in regard to the decorated table contest. A number of small kitchen tables will be provided, and the competitors will decorate them with flowers (real or artificial), vases, etc.
For the school children's singing and reciting competitions many entries liavo already been received. Thov will close with Mr. F. Allen (care of H. F. Allen, Customhouse Street) at 5 o'clock tomorrow. These comnetitions will be held in tho Coronation Theatre in the morning, and between the two competitions a Punch and Judy show will be given from jho stage. A pianist will bo provided, but the boys and girls who intend to sing should trv and bring their music with tlieni. There will ■be handsomo silver medals given for first, second, and third prizes in each contest. The judging will either bo by acclamation or show of hands. There will bo a free picture show in the theatre during the afternoon, and a special ono (in which, a set of exclusive films will be shown) at night, when a charge of fid. ner liead will be made. The Punch and-Judy show will also be given in the Stadium at 2 p.m. and i p.m. The Mission and Garrison Bands will be in attendance, and there will bo an orchestra in the Stadium. - j
Every thousandth person who enters tho turnstiles will receive .1 Walthaiii watch, and tho person who guesses nearest to the total number who pass through the turnstiles during the day will receive a prize of .510. In addition lo oil these attractions, it is estimated tint between Xl5O and .£-00 worth of samples will bo given away by' exhibitors during the day. It has been arranged that the "Living Bridge" tourney which was so successful on Saturday night last will be repeated in the Stadium on Saturday evening next —Exhibition Day. This completes the bill for the day. The competitions in sinking and reciting take place in the theatro in the morning, pictures in tho afternoon and evening." In the Stadium there_ will be children's . sports in tho morning; tho baby show in the afternoon, and "living bridgo" in the evening.
EUGBY NIGHT.' Last night was Ilugby night at the Exhibition Stadium, and somo interesting ovents were run oil'. The following were the results:— 50yds. Handicap.—First heat: M. Mathie (17yds.) and .T. Scott (I.lyds.), dead heat. Time, 6 l-sscc. Sccond heat: M. Pool (scr.), 1; V. Bernard (3yds.), 2. Won by inches. Time, Gsec. Filial: M. Toole, 1; V. Bernard, 2. Time, 5 •4-asec.
Half-mile Handicap.—P., Turner (scr.), 1; P. W. Reed (10yds.), 2. Ten competed. Time, 2min. 27sec. Relay Eace.—Wellington Pootball Club, 1; Oriental, 2; Athletic, 3. A great race between secoiul and third men in tho final round. Tug-of-war.—Petouo beat Oriental; Southern beat Wellington; Southern'beat I'etone. SPOUTS COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Exhibition Sports Committee last eveniug, the question of holding a ball in the Stadium on July 28 was further discussed. Owing to the shortness of time, it was deemed inadvisable to hold a fancy-dress or masquerade ball, but sub-committees were appointed and all arrangements put in hand for tho holding of an ordinary ball on the dato mentioned. It was reported that the preliminaries had been arranged for the wrestling contest to-night, and that all details in connection with the contest bad-been settled. The prico of admission on the night of the "Territorial Boxing" is to be the same as that for tho wrestling contest— 2s. Gd. right through. ,■ The hockey final is to bo played in conjunction with the' -athletic sports 011 the night of July 2G. COMING EVENTS, To-niglit a wrestling match will lio held between L. Robertson,and Joe Gardner for the professional welter-weight championship of New Zealand. The fancy dress ball has been abandoned, and it has been decided instead to hold a ball on July 28. Double tickets will bo 10s.. and single tickets ss. A territorial boxing match is to be held on Friday night. A number of competitors from tlie Petone Navals, tho Engineers, and the Fifth Regiment will tako part. Among those to enter the ring will be Stewart, Murphy, Adamson, and Joplin.
Good entries have been received for tho Friday night's sports gathering. Tho compo'tition for Mr. L. E. Partridge's cup promises to be very keon. Captain M'Leod will give displays of sharp shooting, knife-throwing, etc.
An attraction at' _ the Exhibition is tho beautiful exhibit of Mr. F. W. Monthey, of Mount Albert. It consists of an exquisite variety of Australiasian shells that have been worked into artistic designs by the exhibitor, consisting of photo frames, handkerchief boxes, and ornaments of many kinds. This exhibit should draw considerable attention from patrons.—Advt.
