MASTERTON NOTES.

■ (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, July 18. The retail price of factory butter was increased in Masterton to-day to Is. sd. per pound. The "Wairarapa Caledonian Society holds its third winter concert in Murray's Hall to-morrow evening. A very excellent programme has been arranged. Mr. J. B. M'Kenzie will be the director in charge. One of tho most successful competitors at the musical and literary festival in Masterton last week was Miss Nellie Hogg,, a daughter of Mr. A. AY.- Hogg, M.P. This young lady, who is a pupil of Mr. G, ;C. Branson, of this town, was speciaJiy commended by the judge for her elocutionary .attainments. .'• As it has been found that the meeting of sheep-owners called for July 29 (to fix the rates..for shearing, for the coming season) would clash with other fixtures, it has b«en decided to hold the meeting on Monday, July 2t.

At tho meeting of the Management Committee of the Wairarapa Hockey Association last evening it' was decided to re-play the Mertiiiborough-Daleficld match at Greytown. Mr. N. Boyd was elected to the committee, vice the Rev. Mr. Eaine, resigned. The Ladies' Associaion was granted permission to make a charge at the gate on tho occasion of tho St. Mat-thew's-lixcelsior shield match. Dates wero fixed for the trial matches.

Bro. P. Corbett, A.D., presided at the ordinary meeting of Stojiehcnge Lodge, U.A.0.D., last evening. , One friend was initiated, nnd six proposed for membership.

The stewards of the Taratahi-Carterton Hacing Club have passed a resolution of sympathy with the Masterton Club in tho loss of their appointments, and have generously offered tho free use of the Taratahi courso for the next Mastertou meeting.

At the meeting of tho. Masterton Trust Lands Trustees last evening Mr. 0. Pragnell moved: "That no scholarship grants be made to pupils matriculating from thc District High School whose- parents do not reside within the Masterton Borough 0 rtlio Small' Farm Settlement of Masterton." _ As tho motion was considered of somo importance, the discussion upon it was deferred until a futnro meeting. The building which has dono duty in Masterton as a polico station since 1875 is to be removed to tho rear of tho Town Hall, where it will bo used as an en-gine-room in connection with tho electric light installation.
