QUEEN MARY'S HOSTEL

Queen Mary has justified her reputation as an advocate of practical home management by personally assisting the promoters of a scheme for the establishment in London of an institute of household science in connection with King's College for Women. It is the most useful and popular thing which she has to far (lone, says an English writer. It is generally admitted—in fr.ct notori-ons-J-that the great majority of the English people show little skill in their domestic economy. There is waste, discomfort, neglect of hygiene. ■ The cookin? in working class homes is miserably bad. It is a subject of wonder and contempt to Germans, French, Italians, and Americans who have had any opportunity to see samples of it. There is still, too, a great loss of infant life in England, for which the ignorance of the mothers is mainly responsible. The purpose of the new institute, which is to be called "Queea Mary's Hostel," is to carry on and greatly extend the study of household economics begun about three years ago at King's College. Thus a large body of teachers will 1« raised and distributed throughout the country, and ultimately,- it is .honed, ■ they willbring about a general improvement" in home management Financially, the scheme is onß of considerable size. 4 building for the hostel will cost .£20,000, and another ,£20,001) will be spent on equipment. The Queen has worked to such purpose that already has been privately subscribed, but an additional sum of about .£50,000 will be needed for endowment. As the movement is everywhere applauded, there, can be little doubt that this further sum will soon be forthcoming.
