FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
SOUTH ISLAND ACTIVITY. Tho exceptionally heavy consignments of sheep and lambs that- havo been coming forward to tho regular lJurnsiile tales during the past few weeks (says the "Otago Daily Times"), and the fact that freezing buyers have been operating *'•< extensively nnve created quite unusual activity in the local meat freezing industry. At tho Christcliurcli Jleat Company's works at Hurnside up to 2000 sheep and lambs per day are now being killed. 'I he season opened this year 011 Februury 15, and although tho date was later than usual by a fortnight the quantities put through already exoeed those for the whole of last season, which terminated on August 27. Up to July 5 a total ot 159,740 carcasses of sheep and lambs bad passed through the works, as against 150,521 carcasses for tho whole of the season last year. Tho season opened briskly enough, but supplies eased off about the middle of May, in keeping with an easing market, but:when prices improved shortly afterwards liberal supplies again commenced to come forward, and this state of affairs litis continued hver the past month. 'Die position in North Otago has been quite the reverse, os owing to the disastrously dry season experienced the company's works there were closed down shortly after the season opened. The paucity of supplies did not warrant a continuance of operations, and since then what little, stock has been offering has' been divided between the Dunedin and Cbristchurch works. During the past ten days over 32,000 carcasses of fror/Cn mutton and lamb have been shipped by the company from Port Chalmers by the Otaki and Athenic for the Home market.
