RUGBY FOOTBALL.
THE WELLINGTON UNION. ORDINARY MEETING. A meeting of the Management Comnitteo of the Wellington Rugby Union was held last night. There were present: Messrs. E. 0. Hales (in the chair), W. ■ Perry, W. Hardham, E. Little, J. Sweeney, and J. Burns. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Union asking for dates on which the' seuior and junior representatives would be able to play in the Wairarapa.— It /was decided to. suggest August 5 tor a ' junior match, the fixing of tne date for the senior match to be held oyer. The Auckland Rugby Union forwarded the programme for its representative team on tour. Tho dates of matches are:Wellington, September 2; Dunedin, September l>; Canterbury, September !); and Taranaki, September li. The letter asked if the suggested (late for tho Wellington match was suitable.-r-The date was approved. Tho sub-committee appointed to go into the question of sixth class and school football reported having sent out. circulars in reference to both schemes. It is proposed to have an age limit of 151 years (on April 1) for 'the sixth class matches, which would bo played between 1.45 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Each team entered • will be'supplied rith fi football, and travelling expenses will be payed when a team has to visit an outside ground. In the schools competition the age limit will be 14 years, and the matches will be played between 12.45 and 1.45 p.m. on Saturdays. RETURN OF 'VARSITY MEN! ■ The New Zealand University Rugby football team, which has been playing a series of matches in Sydney, refused to Wellington by . the Uliniaroa yesterday, after a very pleasant time. Three matches were played, in all of 'which the travellers won two. The first match against the Sydney University, on July 1, drew' an' attendance of 5000. The second match against, the. same opponents was won by New Zealand, 9 points to 3. This game was played on a ground which was naif under water, and there were only a few hundred enthusiasts present. The third match was against a Metropolitan representative team, which proved too strong for tho visitors; the result being:— New Zealand. 6; Metropolitan',' 22. There was a very fair gate, in spite of a big League match wiUvthe race for the sprint championship of the . world.' (between Postlo and Holway) run during the spell. Tho result of tho touv was satisfactory from a financial point of view, the revenue showing a ,£2O profit on the trip. Mr. L. J. Potter (captain, of Dunedin) stated that League football was certainly dominant in : Sydney .at the present time, but there is nothing.to be downhearted about in respect to the purely amateur game, which ho was 'hopefnl would come on again, after the novelty of the League ?arne had. worn off.
