IN THE FAR SOUTH.
NOTES ON THE SEASON. Some interesting notes on tho season in tho far south aro contributed by the Fairfield correspondent of an i'nvercargill paper :— . "The sharp frosts we have had are gone (ho say.-), mid now we (ire getting rain, yet better winter weather tor ail farm purposes could not bo desired. Stock are on turnips and are doing well. The dairy farmer tas his. cows on tho very choicest feed on the farm. Two mouths are ample for dairy cows before calving to he on the turnips, and after calving a few acres of duns can b,e c-jt and thrown over the fence, as there cannot be much of a bite before Oc'obor or November. The factories are tidying np and getting the machinery in working order preparatory to commencing,' work in September. This is the'dormant month oF the season, nud considering it is winter time tho country could not look to better advantage. The plough is going preparing for spring sowings, and the ensuing root crop* and the autumn sown brands are looking excellent. The ewes nre carrying a dense coat of wool, and the lambs arc sold and gone, only a few teqs remaining. "Everything points to n successful ensuing season. tli? milking season commences farmers find great difficulty in setting men and youths who can milk, nor do they want to learn, as they imagine cow spnnkiiig beneath their dignity, yet they cannot call it hard work, as invariably they are asked to do nothing else but clean the cow byre and attend to the milk cart horse." A settler has billed a eounly council for ,£lO "for one cow poisoned." It was stated that the cow died after eating tutu cuttings. '
