SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Ladies' Evening at a Club,

Last evening tho -Wellington Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association broke down the barriers that have hitherto guarded the promises of their club from the invasion of womankind, and, throwing wido open their doors, gave a "ladies' evening." It was quite tho first time in its history that such a thing had been done, and accordingly thero was a very largo attendance of their specially "permitted" visitors, most of whom displayed a considerable amount of interest in their unwonted surroundings. Tho comfortably-appointed interior of tho building presented a very attractive appearance, and; again, woman can but say, as always, "How exceedingly well man attends to his wants"—for it is an accomplishment at which usually ho particularly excels. Card-rooms, tho huge billiard room, enviously regarded by some, of tho guests, the reading and writingroom, and rooms on still another floor, were all thrown open, and the invasion was practically complete. For a timo tho billiard room detained a groat many people, and then tho sounds of inusic from the reading-room near by, turned for the occasion into a concert chamber, lured them thither, to listen to a most cnjoyablo and varied programme. As the visitors arrived at the club they were welcomed in the entrance hall by Mr. H. C. Tewsley, tho president of tho club, and some of tho officers. Later on, when everyone had assembled in tho concert room, Mr. Tewsley, in a very pleasant little speech, remarked upon tho evcntfulness of the occasion in tho history of the club, and.of the pleasure such an innovation gave him. It was only the other day, July i, in, Auckland, that tho Northern Club had thrown open its doors and entertained the ladies in a somewhat similar manner—a very titling day, it had seemed to him, for such an occasion. In the concert that followed items were contributed by Messrs. Hollow, A. C. C. Stevens, Minifie, Osmond; Meyer, Borneo Gardner, Fletcher,■? Girdlcstoue, Grant, Carr, Newton, Searle,. and also.-by M'Laughliu's 'Orchestra. -'tfr^J^-, Supper was served in an upstairs room, numbers of small tables being prettily arranged with white and yellow narcissi, while palms disposed in various corners of. the room, added a graceful effect to it, as, indeed, they did in all tho other rooms and corridors. Mrs. Tewsley, the president's wife, was present, and .was wearing a black satin gown, relieved with white and trimmed with jet. A Lady Superintendent of Hospitals. The newly-appointed lady superintendent of the nursing staff of the Auckland .Hospital, Miss -M. H.
