INQUIRY OVER THE PELOTAS.
SHOULD SHE HAVE ANCHORED? (By ToleEraph—Press Association.) Wanganul, July 3. Mr. F. V.- Eraser and Captains Post and Grey (assessors) sat to-day t'o inquire into tho recent stranding of tho barquen. tine Pelotas. Evidence was given to tho effect that tho vessel had been towed over t'ho bar by the Freezing Company's lighter Ihis- • tlo and, when Hearing tho ontranco to , tho river, a heavy fresh ovcrpowored the I lighter, tho captain of which shouted to , the capt'ain of tho Pelotas that h« would ; have to tow him to sea again. This was ' tried but when tho vessels, reached tho end of tho molo tho current carried the Pelotas ashore. At the inquiry to-day bot'h masters and tho pilot wore of opinion that everything was done to prevent disaster. Tho question was raised as to whother it would not' have been better to liavo dropped anchor when the current liecame too strong. Opinion was divided, some witnesses thinking such a course would have been useless as tho anchors would not have held. . The Court gives, judgment this morning.
