PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Tdeeranh.— Sijecial Correspondent.* Palmcrston North, July 3. The Hon. D. Buddo has been invited to attend the annual dinner of the local firo brigade, which is to be held on July 19. Among the cases to bo. heard in tho Magistrate's Court to-morrow is one in which J. Ritchie- is suing tho Manawatu No-License League for ,£73, alleged to bo due for organising work. Mr. A. E. Atkinson, of Wellington, is to conduct the defence, and Mr. lnnes will appear for tho plaintiff. Tho total rainfall in Falmerston for June was 4.18 inches, raili falling on 19 days. Before tho Registrar of the Supreme Court to-day, James M'Laughlin, of Mangaweka, was adjudged bankrupt, on tho petition of S. T. Best and Co., of Auckland. A man named Stanley Slater, a cabdriver, was fined ,£5, in default a month's imprisonment, for an assault upon H. J.Woodfield. David Dander was sentenced to 14 daj's' imprisonment on a charge of stealing a bicycle, the property of William Brophy. The Manawatu Flaxmill Employees' Union proceeded against A. and L. Seifert for a breach of tho Flaxlr.illors' Award in allowing their employees to carry (lax over a chain and a half to n tramline. Defendants pleaded guilty and a fine of ,£2 and costs 13s. was inflicted. Amy Miles, barmaid at tho Clarendon Hotel, was fined .£2 and costs 255.. for supplying liquor to a young man named Leonard Mousley, under 21 years .of age, being a breach of tho Licensing Act. At All Saints' Church to-day, Jlr. A. Smith, son of Mr. P. W. Smith, of Wainukurau, was married by the Rev. G. H. Roscher to Miss E. K. Grinton, of Falmerston. Negotiations are proceeding between representatives of the Palmerston Borough Council and the Gas Company on the question of the former taking over the gas works. - : A meeting of tho council of the local branch of tho Professional Musicians' Society was held ..on.. Saturday evening, Mr. C. TV. Naylor presiding. Tho Education Department intimated that now that tho branch was registered there would be no difficulty in securing concessions from the Railway Department for pupils of members travelling lo their lessons. Two new members wero elected, one being a resident of Napier. After the business of the meeting had concluded, the rest of the evening was devoted to music. The Purchasing Committee of the Palmerston Hospital Board has arranged to buy a site for tho proposed Old People's Home from the Kairanga County Council, the latter body having consented to let the board have a portion of, its Awapuni reserve at a nominal figure., Tho site will comprise about ton acres. . The Kev. H. G. Roscher preached another special sermon to meu at All Saints' Church yesterday afternoon, the subject of the discourse being "A Brother's Keeper." Mr. Thomas Patrick Fair, aged 71 years, died at Palmcrston yesterday. The late Mr. Fair was formerly a well-known figure in the police force, occupying tho position of sergeant at Greyiuouth for some time. Of recent years ho was a member of the staff of the Public Trustee's Office in Wellington, but was retrenched about twelve months ago, and has, since then,, resided in Palmerston, where he had considerable property. Deceased was a single man, but had a number of relatives here and in Wellington.
The committee of the Manawatu Hunt met on Saturday evening, and transacted a quantity of business in connection with its annual Steeplechase meeting and ball, which is to be held on July 26. Mr. Jlassey, Leader of the Opposition, passed through ralmerston to-day on his way to .Napier. |
