Tho differentiation in • the freights charged by the Union Steam Ship Company between Auckland nnd Gisborno and Wellington aud Gisborno lias been brought under t'he notice of Hio local manager for tho Union Company (says the Auckland "Herald"). Upon receipt of tho Gisborne merchants' circular the president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce (Jlr. Leo. Myers) waited upon the local manager and discussed the position with him. Tho latter pointed out that the freight charged by the Squall at the present time from Auckland to Gisborne was 12s. fid. per ton, (lie snmo as that charged by the Richardson line from Wellington to Gisborne. The president, however, emphasised tho fact that tho Auckland and Gisborno merchants felt that they should not bo asked to pay any more by tho larger boats of the Union Company than was paid by tho Wellington merchants. The manager pointed out that, while the company had every desire to meet any reasonable request from Auckland, there were many difficulties in the wav, but ho promised that (lie matter wou.d be investigated. A definite reply from the company is expected in tlie course of a day or two. In the event of the reply being unsatisfactory, it is intended to call a meeting of Auckland merchants to consider tho position. ' '
