PRISONERS' BID FOR LIBERTY.
ONE FATALLY SHOT BY A WARDER. By ToleEraph—Pre3s Association—Oopyriebt Hobart, Juno 27. Two prisoners, Henry Cooper and William Buckney, made a sensational attempt to escape from gaol. Cooper was fatally shot by a warder. The two men wero working in the shoemaker's shop, and during tho temporary absence of ono of tho warders they climbed up the iron bars to the roof.
Warder Driscoll called upon them to surrender, but they took no notice. He then fired in the air. As the men still took no notice, Driscoll shot Cooper in tho body.
Buckney, seeing his companion fall, becamo frantic with rage. He savagely attacked the warders, but' was overpowerod.
Cooper died shortly afterwards. It was his third attempt to escape; once he was successful for a few days.
