HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, when tnere were present: Tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny) and Councillors Hobbs, Stevenson, Clendcn, Hodgins, Enight, Ball, Boots, Kempthornei Hawthorn.
Inspector Hugo wrote stating that the council's request to inspect the fire escape's in its various public buildings, was a special one, and it would b<i necessary to communicate with the Minister for Internal Affairs before an , inspection could be made'. ICo fee would be charged. —Clork , to write to the Minister. ■
Replying to criticisms made by the Fire Brigade, in regard to St. James Hall, the trustees' pointed out that, as the hall was only built to seat under 300 people, the doors and exits in use would quite meet with the requirements of public safety.—Received.. The Railway Department wrote pointing out' that Melling Station was in the sahio position as other flag stations, and, therefore, they could not meet the council's request to place a. lamp on the rood near tho station. Mr. Bunny remarked that the- road was vested in tho Lands Department.—lt was resolved to hold the matter over till the reconsideration of the estimate;!.
The Hutt County wrote stating that the council had been informed that the Hutt Borough Council intended diverting storm-water through a water-drain at Park Avenue from the land of Mr.' Birch and others in such a way that it must flood the council's road at a point where the Nai Nai and Swamp Roads junction. They emphatically objected to the work being proceeded with, and would hold the council liable to any damage done to the road.—The engineer explained that he considered that there was a. right lo do the work, and lhat. tho storm-water would cause no trouble. It was decided to reply accordingly. Mr. Freeman. Alicetnwn, stated that, he "was amongst typhoid fover," owing lo certain things relating to connections with the sewage.—The Town Clerk was instructed to obtain further particulars.
Eleven residents of King Road asked that a surface-drain bo put in. Tho cost would be about £136.—Referred to the Works Committee.
The engineer reported that the drain in Pnrk Avenue had now been completed, the cost to date bein;; «£lll Ms. 7d. Section 2of the eastern drainage had been proceeded with as far as Huia Street. Pipes had been laid in To Xlomi Kstate ns. far as Tui Street—a distance of lt.V chains from Victoria Street. The drain in Victoria Street had been laid as far as Buckley Street. A pas lamp had been erected at Dr. ITector's corner, and another in Kiverbank Street. Three, connections had been made with the gas service and eight with the water-mains, the total to date being 717. Two hundred mid fifty-five permits under the drainage and sanitary." by-laws had been issued to date. Last Wednesday there had been a break in the mains at the septic tank, which, after some delay.
