GROCERS AND THE HOLIDAY.

• Mr. AV. Grenfell, secretary of . the AVellington Employers' Association, informed a Dominion' reporter yesterday that' he had been requested by several leading citizens to see if some arrangement could be come to so that the grocers' shops might be closed to-day in honour of the Coronation. JIo therefore rang up Mr. E. J. Carey, secretary of tho employees' union, yesterday morning nnd asked him whether there was any chance of the. union accepting to-day as a holiday in lieu of to-morrow (Prince of AVules's birthday). Mr. Carey replied that the union could not make such an arrangement. The position, therefore, remains unchanged. The grocers will work to-day and will keep holiday to-morrow as provided by their award. Mr. Grenfell also alluded to a statement by Mr. Carey, reported in yesterday's Dominion. Mr. Carey had said that "frftm what he knew of tho members of the union, ho believed they were prepared to forgo a day's pay if they were granted a holiday on Thursday." Upon this Mr. Grenfell'remarked: "Mr. Carey omitted to say that the union intended to hold the employers to the full provisions of the award, which entitles them to a holiday on Prince of Wales's birthday, or double pay, plus the ordinary weekly wage. They would thus get three days' pay for' one day's work.
