MORRIS-TUBE TEAMS
4 ■ — PROGRESS OF COMPETITION. With one match fired for each team in the Morris-tube Association's competition last week, one is able to get a fair idea of the shooting capabilities of tho individuals. In the senior division the Gas Company's team, have put up a standard which will bo very hard to beat or even maintain. With an average of just under 33 points per man, tho score is a splendid one. Their opponents, the Working Men's Club, have averaged just under 32 points per man, which, considering the fact that it was their first shoot on the range, is a good one. So far as high scoring is concerned this was the best match of the week. Of the other matches, with the exception of the T.H. and G. team, whose total was 322 points, no team put on more than 310, but notwithstanding the comparatively low average there were some fine individual shoots. For T.H. and G., the following were the best scores:—A. Bellamore, 35, W. Jackson 31, A. Jackson 31, Dcdd 34, Morris 32, Godber 32. This match was fired against the Teachers' Sports Club, and was won by over 100 points. In tho Gas Company's senior team, Collins made 35, Aston 31, Dodgeon 31, Smallbono 34, Chiniside 33, Topp 32, Coombes 32, Butler 32, Street 32, Teague 31; total 329. This match was fired against the Working Men's Club, whose score was 316, made up bv • Howard 34, Wood 31, Jenkins 33, M'Bain 32, Julian 32, Gamble 31, Smith 31, Francis 31, Flynn 30, Nixon 28. Petone beat Odlin's by 6 points, their totals being 310 and 301 respectively. For Petone, Mav 35, Hog? 31, Elder 33, Henderson 32, did well; and, for Odlin's, Fcllingham 35, Smart 33, Hoddcr 33, and M'Donald 32 were the best. Luke's beat tho "Post" team by the narrow margin of i points, which 4 points should have belonged to the "Post," one of their men haing fired on the wrong target. For Luke's. Roberts, W. Wilson, Luke, Brett, nrd ■Ferguson each made 32; and, for the "Post," Havmes 33, France and Johnson (32 each), were the best; the totals for bo'th-t-esnis being: Luke's 308, "Post" 301. There were only two matches fired in the junior division, and, of the four competing teams, the Exchange Club put up the best performance. However, the season is young yet, and with steady practice and good coaching the junior scores will probably come nearer to the senior. All teams have a long way to go yet, and no one will feel down-hearted at a first loss or two. The following are the matches and scores:— Exchange v. T.H. and G—Exchange: Shannon 34, Gower 34, Spencer 33, Pudney 32, Pollock 31, and Quill 30 were the best. _ . T.H. and G.-Godber 31, Cairns 31, Smith 31, Winchcombe 31, Huxtablc 30, and Childs 30 did well; the totals being: Exchange 305, and T.H. and G. 292. The other junior match was between "Evening Post" and the Working Men s Club, the Club being tho winner by 33 points. For the 'Working Men s Club, Ryder 31. Morris 32, Flynn 32, Soames 3» and Smith and Bolton 29 each did well. For the "Post," Hodges 32, Homeblow 31, and Harrington, 1.0m?.5, aud Walsh (28 each) were the best; the totals being: AVorking Men's Club 259, "Post" 256. These arc the completed matches for the week ended Juno 15, and there is no doubt that when the teams have properly settled down to business, flic totals all round will show an increase.
TELEPHONE EXCHANGE MATCHES. The Telephone Exchange commenced ]a<t week a scries of competitions for trophies presented by Warden's, Mr. Beaver (jeweller), and Mr. Firth. The shooting was interesting, and promises to be a verv popular sport, there being a fair number "of spectators. It is, however, a pity that, more people do-not take to this patriotic and skilful sport. To the expert rifleman it is quickly noticeable how little some of the newcomers know about handling and using the rifle—a rifle in the hands of an untrained man is a dan"er to his own comrades. Bslow is the "result of the first shoot in the first series. (The club wish to take this opportunity of thanking the generous trophy ■\ Class.—W. Gower (scr.) 33, W. Townsend (ser.) 33. J. E.
