SUNDAY KILLING
NO AGREEMENT AS YET.
The Sunday killing dispute, which arose recently between the City Council abattoir contractors and then- s.auglusrmen, came before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) on Tuesday, but the parties failed to arrive at a fina understanding. The contractors declined to a"rcc to the demand for double pay for Sunday work, advanced by the men. Thcv al=o declined to accede to the demands that the ordinary week ? wages for slaiHiilormen should- be raised from XJ 30s to £-i r>?.; that, the weekly hours Should be reduced from 43 to 44. and that casual work sliould be paid for at. the rate of 16s. per day. At pre-snt thero is no fixed rate of paymeiu for casual work at the abattoir. It was eventual v agreed on Tuesday that the Commissioner should adjourn the hearing of tho dispute in order tint it might be ascertained whether the City Council intend to erect cool stores. If Hiis v,erc done. Sunday killing would be no longer necessary. The Commissioner will endeavour to get some master butchers together, to wait as n deputa.ion upon the Abattoirs' Committee cf the City Council on Wednesday next, and discover whether it is likely lo provide cool .stores. Should tho council decide to do so, the matters in dispute, apart from bunday killing, will again come up for consideration. . ■ _ The City Council some time ago affirmed the desirability of erecting cool sieve?, and later decided to have a liul laid before Parliament which will empower the municipality to provide cool stores as an annexe to a municipal milk depot. Intil this empowering measure has been tnsjed the council will not be in a position to take any further steps in the matter.
