PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
— 9 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, June 14. A meeting of the Citizens' League was held last night, the president (Mr. I?. S. Abraham) being in the chair. There was a good attendance, and several new members were'elected. Tho rule?, as drawn up by the sub-committee, were adopted, subject to confirmation at a subsequent meeting. A discussion took place in connection with the formation of the proposed river board, and the secretary was instructed to make inquiries as to "what had been done in this matter. Tho question of establishing a stamp office here was discussed, and it was decided to get a petition signed in this connection. A motion of condolence was passed" to Mr. f>. Jickell (borough engineer) in relation to his recent bereavement.
Not a great deal of interest appeared to bo taken 10-dny in the observance of Arbor Day. llembers of the Horoiifjh Council and tho Beautifying Society wore present at the planting of trees in Tram .Street, but the general public v.ero conspicuous by their ab.-ence. The Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) addressed those present on the importance of beautifying the town. lie mentioned that it conduced materially towards inducing the right class of people to take up their residence here.
An enjoyable "social" was held in St. Peter's Sunday Schoolroom last cvnnin? under the auspices of the Ladi-s' Guild, in aid of the Church Fund. Dancing and games were indulged in, ami songs were contributed by Miss Fox and Messrs. A. K. Bennett and Aitken, the hdies providing supper. Similar "socials' , are to be held monthly.
At the meeting of tho Kairanga'County Council yesterday, a discussion took place on the driving of motorists, and the manner in which they took charge of the roads. Ono member stated that, if he were on the road once more with his fivehorse wagon team, he would quickly slowdown some of them—a statement, that appeared to meet with the approval of the meeting. The usual meeting of the Terrace End School Committee wa? held last night, Mr. J. A. Nash (chairman) presiding. Communications were received from ills Wanganui Education Board notifying that the date of the annual meetings of school committees was fixed by statu'v, and that tho board had 'no power to alter tho date; also that it did not. propose to take any action in regard to the report of the fire inspector cf I'almerston to the effect that the exits at the .school were insufficient in case of emergency. It was decided to refer the board s letter to the Fire Board. It was decided to (ix a date, later on, for the observance of \rbor Day, and tfiat ths children should take p'art in the Coronation Day celebration;. Application is lo bs made lo the. Education Board for repairs to the, fences nnd windows. The headmaster' Mr. T. F. The secretary reported that six disputes in different trades in the district wero engaging his attention at the present time.
