A WONDERFUL "STRAD."
In the coursc of the leader on Lady Halle in a recent issue of the "Manchester Guardian" reference is made to the "incomparable Stradivarius" violin associated with her triumphs. The instrument has a peculiar interest apart from its tonal merits. It is generally known as the "Ernst" Strad, owing to the fact of its having been the property of that artist. It was given to Ernst by Mr. Andrew Fountain, of Norfolk, one of the most discriminating of the earlier collector* of this country. After the death of Ernst it was purchased (says Hawcis). by the Earl of Dudley and others for the sum of ,£SOO, and presented to Lady Halle. The instrument was made by Stradivari in the year 1709, in what has been called his "golden period" (17001720), when he was G5 years old. The word luscious is the only term that fitly characterises its tone, for its volume and richness it is generally conceded to bo without all equal. In accordance witli the rise in prices of instruments of the first rank, its, present value—apart from sentimental considerations—would probablv be five times the amount last paid for it.
