CHEAPER CABLE RATES.

THEIR VALUE TO IMPERIALISM.

Bγ TelccraDh-Pres3 Association-Oopjrieht

(Rec. June 12, 0.45 a.m.)

Melbourne, June 11., Speaking with reference to the statement recently made by Mr. Millward, manager of the Pacific Cable Board, that deferred cable rates would probably shortly be established as a world-wido fact, the Postmaster-General, Mr. Josiah Thomas, says ho is more concerned in getting cheap cable rates for peoplo who use them for social purposes than for those using them for business purposes. If cablo messages could be sent throughout the Empire at sixpence a word it would do more towards binding the Empire together than any reciprocal treaties. Business people could pass on tho cost of tho cables to the consumers. This, howevor, was not the case with social messages.

MR. FISHER INQUIRING.

London, June 9. Mr. Fisher (the Australian Primo Minister) is inquiring as to tho feasibility of Mr. Thomas's suggestion of a shilling cablo rato between Australia and Montreal, with tho mailing of tho messages to Britain from Montreal.
