THE NEXT PRESIDENT.
MR. ROOSEVELT WILL NOT STAND. By Telegraph—Press Association—CopyrlEht New York, Juno 7. Mr. Roosevelt has caused an announcement to be circulated of his cordial approval of President Taft's candidacy for tho Presidency of 19J2. Ml*. Roosevelt, in an unmistakable manner, has informed Mr. Taft of his intention not to contest the Presidency, and in tho circumstances Mr. Taft's friends believe Mr. Taft's re-election is now assured. A considerable section of the Republicans, it is believed, was in favour of Mr. Roosevelt's nomination. Writing about six weeks ago, the Washington correspondent of the NonYork "Post" said:—"One hears curiously little Presidential politics talked even among men who never by any chance talk anything but politics. Besides Mr. Taft, Senator La Follettc is the only other open and avowed aspirant for the Republican nomination:. As between these two everybody says that it is a foregone conclusion that Mr. Taft will be successful. There arc at least' three persons known t'o have desires for tho Democratic nomination: Woodrow Wilson, Judson Harmon, and Champ Clark. Some persons add to this list a fourth—William J. Bryan, of course. What work is being done on behalf of these Democratic candidates is well under cover at the prosent time, and is not being done here so much as in the various States. As a matter of simple fact, no single topic of public import, if one may judge from ordinary daily casual conversation, so enchains the interest of members of Congress at the present time as the baseball season now fairly beginning."
