NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBy Glencoe.] Good judges, who were present at the A.R.C. meeting, declared that Antarctic has chances as a Liverpool National winner. They express;'the opinion that the Salvadan gelding should be given a chance to emulate the deeds of Moifaa. It is common talk that the horse in question is susceptible of much improvement both in condition and the manner in which he is handled in a race. Jt is to bo hoped that he will stand up to his work, so that we will have a chanco of seeing him over the Riecarlon country. Further, it will be very interesting to tea how the handicapper will weight both him and Te Arai in the event named. There are no more race meetings until June 21, when the nawkr's Hay Winter meeting will be commenced. Tho failure of Merrie Lawn at Otaki on Monday was costly to his new owner. The Merriwee gelding lias pace enough to win plenty of hack hurdle races, but he hangs out badly at the turns, and, as a consequence, covers more ground than anything else in the race. Jockey 1!. Wilson, formerly of Riecarton, but who (during the last few years) has been associated with D. J. Price's stables in Melbourne, is back again in New Zealand, and will probably be riding at the next C.J.C. meeting. The absence of Miss Mischief from the New Zealand Cup nominations woiild lend colour to the report that tho Wellington Cup winner is to go to the stud. The little bay mam was only a handful, and though she was as game as the best of them, her big weights used to hamper her considerably at the end of her races. Lady Rcina, her stable companion, is also to go to the stud. Antarctic opened his winning account at tho Avondale meeting la»t September, when he scored in the steeplechase, anil put up a time record for the race. Since then lie has carried all before him over country in the north, and his owner must be pleased that he refused the tempting oilers several times made lor him.
The Farewell Handicap at EHorMio was —as it lias often been in the pastil dilutions raea for backers. The topiio(ch pony Jack Delaval was imuU? iavouriie, with the Awapuni-tr:iined Nylaud next iti demand. W. pair, Unuehopo and Hohnngalahi, both of whom can «jo very over a five-furlung cour>e, wei*e neglectod by backers, with the lesult. that, when Wauchope won, he paid quite a good price. H. (.tray, who arrived in Auckland on the morning of the races, rode the winner.
With such big fields in evidence, jockeys capable of ridinj; at the minimum weight were a scarce commodity at Otuki, several horses having to be scratched owing to the inability of their owners to secure the services of a lad who can bo relied on lo take proper caic of an animal iu a big held. There were plenty of youugsler* available, but owners are not anxious to court the disaster which must follow entrusting a horse to an immature youngster, whose time, in the majority of instances, is fully occupicd in retaining his seat, without guiding his mount out of the many pitfalls in evidence in a crowded field.
The fashionably-bred Bourbon, who proved such a disappointment on the tracks, has been sold by his Duncdin owner, and will, next season, do stud duty in the Feilding district.
It is little wonder that Antarctic started a good favourite at Ellerslie on Wednesday. He was ridden by a jockey named Scott, and the event was the Winter Steeples.
Whakaweira and Lord were shipped home after the second day's racing at Ellerslie.
Lo Beau has started fnnr times in the Great Northern Steeplechase, running thrco times third, and once fourth.
Last week Cullinan was given exercises over the battens at Grncnmeadows, and acquitted himself satisfactorily.
Finland arrived at Xapier on "Wednesday to replace Koyal Fusilier at T. H. Lowry's stud. Koyal Fusilier is now in the South Island.
Owners arr 1 given n final reminder Hint nominations for all event? at. the Napier Park liacing Club's meeting clcbo tonight. Kecont, additions to F. Davis s team at Cireenmeadows include: Kwansong (a griding by Birkenhead out of Madrigal), Beldame (a filly by Royal Fusilier—La Cloche), War Talk (the younger full sister to War Scare and half-sister to Bobnko(T), "and an unnamed filly by Royal Fusilier out of fioso Madder.
The three latest winners of the Great Northern Steeplechase lnve all been chestnuts, viz., Capitol, Eed AlGrcsor, and Corazon.
Master Soult broke down badly during the race for the Princo of Vt ales Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday, and it is once more reported in the Auckland papers that the son of Soult is to bo retired from the racing track.
