NOTES AND COMMENTS. \ [Bv Glexcoe.] The Trentliam trainer, ■ J.- Lowe,- had a. "try-out" with a couple. ,of his year-' lings yesterday, and the pair moved very nicely. This is tlie -first the youngsters have been "at lop." Ebonite, who recently joined J. Lowe's team after a lengthy spell, created a diversion on the Trohtham trucks on Saturday morning by rearing up and unseating, his rider, who sustained a broken collarbone. Aurora has left F. J. Carmonfs stables, and will, in future, bft trained by J. Fryer at Hawora. The Conqueror mai'e is owned by a well-known farmer in the'Manakau district. An offer of .£IOO was made and refused for Boync AVater after the Second Hurdle. Race at Otaki. The Birkeuhead geidh.g finished very strongly, and seems certain to win a hack hurdle race during the winter. That the running of Parewanui in the Telegraph Handicap at Otaki on Monday was "all wrong" is proved, by the fact that, on the previous morning, he. galloped with Aurora, and badly defeated the Conqueror mare, who only suffered defeat in tho race by a head. Moonshine finished very strongly in the .Wfcgiviph Handicap at Otaki, and will not be long in picking up a scurfy, event. Mr. Collins's filly was not seen in the early parts of the race, but. She. was putting in two to'the others' one at tho finish. In addition to trainers M.. M Grath and J. O'Zveill, who are taking teams', to Melbourne next, week, "it -is- also stated that .T. Wilson will join the boat at. Wellington next week, and that he will not go without a horse.
The half-brother to Armistice, trained by T. George at Awapuni, is showing promise on the tracks, and will make his first public appearance in llic Trial Plate at Trontlihin next month.
C. O'Neill has grown tired of Overhoard, and the^ gelding has been returned to his ow'net ; ;"\vho will put him in the paddock. . .
Defeat, who pulled up lame after (he Grandstand Steeples at. Wangnnui, is again quite rigltl, and will be schooled at Aivapuni next week.' ' . .
Another attempt is to be made to convert Windage into a hurdle horse, and C. Price will journey to Ashlnirst next week to school him.
"Stan" Reid made a successful debut as a hurdle horseman at Wingatui last Saturday, ,whcn he scored in tho Fairfield Hurdles on Iving Try, who was racing over hurdles for tho first 'time.
The Advance colt, Tetikura, has been leased by Mr. T. F. Goddard, owner of Mulga Bill. ' ' At Ellerslie. to-day, the Auckland Racing Club's meeting will be brought to a close. The principal events to bo decidt>d are tho Winter Steeples, Campbell Hurdles, and York Welter Handirap. The exhibition of riding given by one Df the horsemen engaged in tho hurdle race at Otaki on Monday' was rather 'humorous. His mount stumbled.badly at one of the fences, and the youngster went out. on his horse"s ears. By sheer good hick he regained the saddle while his mount was still stumbling, ant! then, to balance himself, he administered a couple of cuts with tho whip, and, for. fear of further accidents, hung round the horse's neck for tho rest of the journey. Monologue is to bo spelled till the spring, and his owner will shortly tako in hand a younger sister to this promising horse. Roumac, who finished fourth in the Gre.-.t Northern Hurdle Race, running a good, race under , list., was brought home to Feilding on Monday in charge of Trainer Attwood. This horse was originally handicapped at 10st. fllb., but incurred a. 51b. penalty owing to receiving an extra <£5 note at Hastings when he won there, the Jib being third 'money not lifted by Hoanga, one of the three starters, who fell and did not finish tho course. Had Hoanga stood up and taken third place and the £h, it would have saved Roumac the 51b. penalty, which latter, no doubt, affected his running to some extent over the lengthy two miles and a half attaching to the Great Northern. ■' Auratus, who went amiss on tho eve of tho Great Northern meeting,, was shipped for home by the Rarawa on Sunday (says tho "N.Z. Herald"). The Gold Reef gelding galloped well in his training work at Ellerslic, but on Friday one of his forelegs filled and he was scratched for all engagements. Thfl grey horse Bachelor finished up very lame in tho Maiden Steeplechase on Saturday, and is not likely to do any good this winter. King Hippo's withdrawal from 'the Great Northern Steeplechase was due to the fact, that he was badly staked un Sunday last. Among (he winfters at the Kensington pony meeting in Sydney on Mpy. 24 were the New Zealand ponies Merry Oliver (by Merriwee) and Mailing.! (by Soult). Lionheart is being given regular swimming exercise at Foxton, and if ho stands up to his work satisfactorily, he will bo entered for steeplechase events later on. Nominations for all events at tho Napier Park Raciiiß Club's steeplechase , meeting close with tho secretary on Friday next at 8 p.m. FIXTURES. June 7—Auckland R.C. Great Northern Steeplechase. .
