THE IDEAL SHEPHERD.
Eβ looks into the abyss cloven with fire, And dares to note the awful sights he sees, And face the awful doubts those sights inspire, ■'.And God discerns in.awful mysteries: The. first surmisings of new truths do dawn "Upon the horizon of his heart and brain; The while, no less, within himself withdrawn The great Traditions of the Past remain: "The proper study of mankind is man," The immortal words of Pope, possess his mind; Each social impulse he doth keenly scan, , Like as the mariner each veering wind: For piled up knowledge hath he little use Of icy thought, nor human nor divine; But such as human pathos doth suffuse, And with the thought of Man doth God combine: ■ He strange vibrations deep within doth feel, While the Sightless Splendour holds the inner eye; Can with the living Psalmist prostrate kneel Before the living Majesty on high: Who thus adores, and dares, and sees, must lead; And such a Shepherd best the flock can feed.
