' What was in his mind was a not which occurred somo years ago, when tho police ' were mobbed while trying to enforce tho Licensing Act, and wore subjected to treatment that was not only disgraceful but dangerous. Having that in his mind, ho sai(f that when rocks were thrown women were not safe. He would like to ask if pressure was not brought to bear on tho Department to Bet thosn policemen removed, if there was not a refusal, whether the riot was not lite oiifcomo of that refusal, and if the people of Waihi did not consider the liquor traffic such a menace in their midst that they wiped it out? Sergeant Sheehan and others wore subjected to bad treatment, and ho said that where policemen wore ill-treated no woman was safe. The audience, by a show of hands, accepted Mr. l'oole's statement as satisfactory, only ono person expressing dissent.
