AGAINST MANAV/ATU. WELLINGTON' WINS-G GOALS TO 2. On Saturday afternoon on No. 1 Ground, Day's Bay, Mnnawatii representatives met an eleven representing Wellington and endeavoured lo wrest the shield from them. The visitors were un.sucer-siiil. Although Wellington's score was a large one, ihe challenger.-, nevertheless, put up a game light on a heavy and slippery ground. About SUU spectators watched the game in addition to which a number of those who purchased tickets beforehand did not make the journey. This is the tir.sf shield event so far this season, but others are lo follow. Jn addition to the above match a li team ircm Manawatu met the local Wedne.-.day represenlalives on . the Basin I,'csorvc on Saturday at II a.m. A draw resulted, each side scoring three goals. Strack; left wing, E. Loader. Mr. Falconer carried out the duties of referee in a very capable manner. How Ihe Game Went. Manawatu had the advantage of ' the south wind, and, after Elliott had won the initial "bullv," the visitors made oh down the left-wing, the position soon appearing dangerous for Wellington. However, Loader received the ball from near the home team's goal, and dashed off smartlv, finishing up with a rather wide shot n't the net. The Yellows kept up the pressure, and. before many minutes had elapsed, 0. Strack received the leather from a "roll-in," took the pass on his stick neatlv, and, with a quick and tricky shot, scored the first goal for Wellington. I—o. Davies, Campbell, and Salek came into prominence, whilst Kibblewhite, at full back, effected a splendid "save." by which the game was turned to the other end. Both sid-eswero attacking in turn, and presently Elliott and Co. "dashed off, but Morpeth, in goal, effected a timely rescue. The hvoStracks and Loader kept up a frequently-applied pressure, and whenever the opportunity offered play was transferred from Wellington's territory to the other end of the field with rapidity, Walklev and Kerslake, the Mauawalu full-backs, being called upon continually to save, and they did so fairly well. Loader took an offside shot, but Kerslake again came to the rescue, and "saved" from a scramble in the Manawatu circle. Each side in turn had the advantage, but at length We: carried play to the Yellows' 25, and, assisted by Filt, would have scored, but for the sound defence of the opposing backs. Loader now made an effort, his splendid run finishing wilh his pass lo the centre going high. Elliott secured possession, and passed to Webb on the leftwing, the latter, however, failing to lake the pass. After I'iU had failed to mnfce use of a pass. Sale'.:, on the right-wing, secured, Wellington still keeping play towards their opponents' defence. The last-named player obstructed badly, but was not pulled up, and t.hen Davies, after putting in Fmr.c fine work, was relieved of the ball by Bason, Manawatu's right-half.' The game at this stage was very fast. Sorenson set his forwards in motion, Fitt finally passing to Webb, who was smartly tackled by Hickson. Wellington failed to gain anything off a free-hit in (heir favour, Walklev having defended soundly. Manawatu, however, wero shortly rewarded for their efforts. From a frea-hit against Hickson, the Greens forced matters, Elliott finally securing the ball from his forwards, beating Hickson, scoring a. splendid goal with a very hot shot, i—l. With the scores even, and the eagerness which was plainly visible on the faces of the Manawatu forwards, one would not have cared to express an opinion as to tho final result. However, as luck had it, Wellington's splendid form proved too much for (lie challengers. L<?v!er, on the left wing, aided by the fitrack Bros., was presently seen in a series of brilliant movements, which, however, were well replied to by others initiated by Elliott, Manawatujs centre-forward.- G. Strack and Davies were also conspicuous for splendid stick work, (he former eventually notching Wellington's second goal. Wellington, 2; Manawatu. 1. Following upon attempts to score by Loader and Strack, Manawatu gained, an advantage, but. from a subsequent "corner" hit, G. Strack secured possession, dashed off down tho field, passed to Salek, who, however, .was beaten by Moore, left-half. Play seesawed a little now, the main feature being a duel between Loader and Walkley. From a roll-in near the. Manawatu twentylive, Morgan secured, and passed io Crump. A scramble ensued, but Elliott received, and sent in a deadly shot, Morpeth failing to "save." The scores wero thus once again even. Some hot play supervened. Aicken, Wellington's righthalf, was prominent, and, after play had travelled to mid-iielcl, Fitt secured," sent tho leather lo Crump, who passed to Minogue, the latter forwarding it on to Elliott, who sent in a wide shot. Aicken next . took a free-hit, given against. Minogue for obstruction, and sent the ball down to the Greens' left defence, whero a forward waiting handed it over to G. Strack, who easily beat the Manawatu goalkeeper and scored. The spell ended: Wellington, 3; Manawatu, 2.
The second hslf opened very fast, and, as was expected. Wellington wero more vigorous, and had little difficulty in notching three goals, whilst Manawatu failed to add to their score. Elliott won the "bully" against Webb, and broke away, but Campbell at centre-half came to.(ho rescue. G. Strack initiated a forward movement, but the situation .was relieved by Moore conceding a corner. After further play Elliott got possession of (he ball from his forwards, and sent in a warm shot, which Morpeth, however, cast elf with his usual careful hitting. Looso play ensued, and Wellington pressed, a shot at goal by Strack going wide. Crump then inaugurated a rush, and pas-?(l to Minogue, who, from loc-o play, centred to Webb. The last-named iiado n line shot, the ball jroing high. It"can fairly be said that Wellington were now giving Manawatu a hot time of it, and
Goo. Slrnck presently managed, from a corner hit, lu send hi a goal with ;i hard "hack-hand" >lioi. "I'lic .-core now read I—2 in I'nvoiir of Wellinatoii. Still another corner was con-cc-d-jd to Wellington by Walklev. ('. Strack attempted |j score oft it, but his push-stroke was ineffectual. From the Mibser|U3iit "bully," Webb got well away, but Manauatu were kept in check by I heir opponents coiurodiiijj a corner. Elliott drove hard at the net off the fi"cliit, but he was well Mirrouudnl by Morpeth, in-goal. anil others of his side. Davies, witli his men close at limd, mado a splendid effort to score, bill- Shortt (ingoal for the greens) conceded a corner. The Yeilows kept up the r.lfack, and, finally, Loader received the ball from the Stracks, and sent in a beautiful fhot. S—2. Manawatu were now showing signs of fatigue. From a roll-in down in the home team's half. Eliicit dashed away once more, only lo find wailing In intercept. ' Play was returned to Mnnawntu's end. ]ier ftilek, Davies, and T/oadc-r, the !ast-n;inied's shot being fumed into a corner by Walkicy. Loader followed up the subsequent free-hit from the corner with a solid rush, but the ball passed io midfield. However, play pi ill hovered in Manawatu's twenty-five, till, presently. Kef-lake came to light with a goad'"save," and set his forwards in motion. The overture, however, was returned bv C. Rtn.-jk, Loader finally scoring from a very difficult shot. G—2.
