PERSONAL ITEMS.
The Hon. J. Carroll, the Hon. J. A. Millar, the Eon. G. Fowlds, and the Hon. A. T. Ngata are in town. Tho Hon. -1(. M'Kenzie and Hon. T. Mackenzie nro still in the south, and the Hon. D. Buddo is in Taranaki.
Mr. "W. I<\ Massey, Leader of tho Opposition, who has just completed a successful platform campaign in, the South. Island, arrived' here yesterday morning. He will go on to Auckland as soon as he lias finished the business which awaits him iu this city.
The Hon. D. Buddo, Minister for Internal Affairs, travelled to New Plymouth on Sa</.;rdav. Ho will open the new post office at Kahotu to-day, and the 'Winter Show at New Plymouth on Wednesday,' and will then go on to the Hauraki ' Plains and tho Bangitaiki Swamp.
Bishop Julius was a passenger by the Maori from Lyttolton yesterday morning.
Mr. M. Rudd, manager for the Union Company at New Plymouth, has been promoted to the Auckland office. He will be relieved by Mr. 0. Holdsworth, acting sub-manager at Lyttelton.
The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P.) is at present prostrated by an acute attack of appendicitis. His last public appearance was on Thursday evening, when he attended a meeting of the City Council which adjourned just before midnight. Mr. "Wilford was taken ill upon returning to his home. It is now reported that the worst phase of the attack is over and a fairlv rapid recovery is anticipated. In any ca'se, however, Mr. Wilford will be incapacitated for any active exertion for some days.
Mr. E. A. Shrimplon, late assistant telegraph engineer nt Auckland, has been appointed to succeed Mr. C. C. Robertson as telegraph engineer in Wellington. Mr. Shrimplon arrived on Friday to take up his new duties.
Messrs. T. Bonaync (general manager of railways), A. L. Beattio (chief mechanical engineer), H. Buxton (chief traffic manager) and J. Burnett (chief maintenance engineer) are visiting the Otago railways on a periodical tour of inspection. They left Dunedin on l'riday for the Catlins River and Lawrence branch lines. Un the former lino they purposed inspecting the unopened line, which extends for a distance of about seven miles past Houipapa. .
