Tins demand comes as a surpri-c to many in the trade, who were under the impression that they could employ assistants en Wednesday afternoon when a full holiday was being granted in the same week. The Master Grocero' Association are to hold a meeting to discuss the matter.

Apropos of the Wellington Industrial Exhibition a correspondent writes to the Dunediii "Star" as follows:—"The weather has bsen far from pleasant—a continuous drizzle—but so far the show has been well patronised. The buildings lent for the occasion by the Harbour Board are spacious, well lighted, and provide amnio accommodation for exhibitors and visitors. Most of the exhibits are extremely creditable illustrations of Now Zealand manufactures. Visitors are loud in their expressions of pleasure and surprise at the magnitude and quality of the display, and Wellingtonians ore not unnaturally elated at the prospect of a big show, towards which the general taxpayer has been asked to contribute not a cent,, turning out a financial success."

At the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church yesterday, special thanksgiving offerings were received in aid of the. church funds. The sum collected amounted to ,€Bl.

In his monthly report to the Board of Governors of the Technical College at Christchurch, Iho director, Mr. J. Howell, stated that he was glad to note that in the Conciliation Court an agreement had been come to between Hie master builders and the union; to recognise the work dono at the Technical College by giving to an apprentice who had gained a twoyears' certificate in carpentry and joinery two shillings per week extra during the last year of his apprenticeship. The establishment of that principle would lead to important and far-reaching results if the employers and workers in other trades would agrco to adopt tho same course.

Mr. George "Witty, M.P., recently drew the attention of the Minister of Internal Affairs to the fact that no statutory provision had been made as to the authority to call meetings for tho election of the new domain boards. Mr. Buddo submitted the question to the law authorities in Wellington, and was advised that the proper bodies to lake the necessary steps to have the elections carried out are tho city councils, borough councils, town ■hoards, and road boards having coutrol of the areas in which the domains may be situated.
