DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETING. THE CORNET WINS THE BIRTHDAYHANDICAP. STEEPLECHASE WON BY TRUE BLUE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, June 2. The Dnnedin Jockey Club's Winter mcoting opened to-day, in tho presence of a fair attendance. The ground was rather greasy owing to a shower which fell prior to tho opening race. The totalisator investments amounted to .£9333 10s., as against .810,002 10s. for the corresponding day at last year's meeting. In the Steeplechase, Stray Fox broke his fetlock, and had to be destroyed. The following are the results:— PACIFIC HURDLE HANDICAP, of 115 sovs., second horse 10 sovs., and third 5 sovs. from the stake. Mr. M. J. No change occurred until reaching the straight, where Stray Fox broke down, and Dorando fell at the first of the double: True Blue led Honest Tom over the sod wall, and Honest Tom came down at the sod wall, commencing the second time round. At tho back True Blue was thirty lengths clear of The Gunner, with Corona next. True Blue won with ease by ten lengths. A good # race for second place found Corona beating The Gunner by half a length, Wonderful being six lengths away fourth, lime, smin. sosec. Going past the six-furlong post, Fireboll was just clear of Sharpshooter, Sombrero and Soldier's Chorus still being in tho rear. Soldier's Chorus improved his position as they ran round tho far turn. Three furlongs from homo Firebell and Sharpshooter were about a length clear of Soulier's Chorus, the others being beaten oft'. In the run up tho straight Soldier's Chorus drew out and won nicely by a length'and a half from Sharpshooter, who beat Fireboll half a length for second place. Sombrero was next. Time, lmin. 31scc.
