NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Br Glencoe.] There will be racing at Dunedin on Friday, and at Kllerslie, Otaki, and Dunedin on Saturday. Capital acceptances have been received for the first day's events at the Otaki Maori Racing Club's meeting, and good racing should result.

When the last mail left England, D. Maher was at the head of the list of winning jockeys, with -0 wins out of 91 mounts. C. Trigg was second' with 18 wins, while 1".. Wootton had li winning mounts to his credit.

Private advice received by telegram from Ellerslie yesterday, states that the National winner,.Paisano, whose last victory at Eiccarton was a heavy blow to the ring, is as well now as ever he was, and that there is no doubt that he will start favourite on Saturday.

. IH-forlunc continues to be the experience of the ex-Xow Zealand trainer D. J. Price in his Melbourne racing ventures. His stable had three supposed "good things", for Sandown Park meating on May 20, but all failed. In the first place Serenade was well supported for the First Division Handicap, only to ruu second; then Golden Cairn started at a short price, atod finished third in the Sandon Park Handicap; and. a final plunge was indulged in over Gipsy Witch, who went out favourite for the Second Division Handicap, and missed a place. All three are New Zealand bred. With the second day of (he Otaki meeting on Monday next the fiat' sea,-on will bo concluded, and thereafter all handicaps on the flat will be commenced with •i minimum of Ost. This means a good time for the riders as, for the next three months, they will not be required to waste. On the other hand, however, if has to be said that from now on very few apprentices will get any mounts for, no matter how good a boy may be, there is always a prejudice against loading a horse with dead weight.

Returned visitors from the Oamaru meeting have a good word to pay for Stepmeter, who has been carrying all before him over short courses 'in tho south. Here, in these parts, wo know that when Ahuapai is out in front, she is exceedingly difficult to dispose of over half a mile, and can always be deponded upon to get inside 50sec. on a good track. In the Electric Handicap at Oamaru, Sir. Whitney's filly had a break of two lengths at the turn, but Srepmeter ran past her, and won in ridiculously easy fashion.

The Palrnerston-owned Rosegrove, who is entered in the steeplechase events at the Dunedin meeting, is not to make the trip south. The Rangipuhi gelding had a run in the Grandstand Steeplechase at Wanganui, but was tailed off the whole way, and, on that form, could have little prospect of success over the Wingatui course, which takes a good deal of jumping. On the Eecond day he won over a furlong further, and carried 9st. 121b.

Monologue, who is engaged in the Maiden Flat event at Otaki on Saturday, showed good form at Feilding and Ha.s'tings, where the opposition was stronger than it will be at Otaki on Saturday.-.

F. Flyun, who was hurt at Ellerslie yesterday, comes from Hawera, and is regarded by many as the equal of any horseman riding over fences to-day. His accident comes at a very bad time, as he was fully engaged at the Ellerslie meeting, and his financial loss (even if he did not win a race) will be heavy. Red Macgregor is a peculiar horse to ride, and no one does so well on him as W. H. Windsor. The latter is getting up in years now (he is on the wrong side of forty), and it is probable that ho is anxious to quit the game, hence tho reason of Flj-nn being up on the chestnut gelding yesterday. There are many horses like Red Macgregor. They are perfect jumpers when allowed to go at their own pace, but, hustle them ever such !i little, and they take off on their wrong leg, or do something similar, and come down. FIXTURES. June 2 and 3—Dunedin J.C. Winter June 3 and s—Otaki Maori R.C. Winter. Juno 3, 5, and 7—Auckland R.C, Great Northern Steeplechase. Juno 21 and 22—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. Juno 28 and Park R.C. Winter. July 6 and 7—Gisborne E.G. Winter,
