COOKS' AND STEWARDS' AWARD.
AN INTERPRETATION,
An interpretation by the Court of Arbitration of the ' I'eclcrated Cooks' und Stewards' Award has been commumcateu to the press by Mr. E. Stocker, Clerk ot Awards. The clauses in question are the following:— , , "(9) When u vessel arrives in port on a Sundar or a. holiday, and sails again the same (lay, overtime shall bo paid to the members" of the providore department for tho time so employed, not exceeding in all eight hours, and not less than lour hours at Is. per hour." "(9) (b) For bar-harbours and roadstead ports the maximum to bo pay, and the minimum three hours' pay, at Is. per hour. "(11) When a vessel leaves port prior to 5 p.m. on a Sunday or a holiday, having been in port on the previous day each member of the. providore department shall be paid overtime for three hours at Is. per hour." . The following was the question submitted to the Court:—"When a vessel Iftives port prior to 5 p.m. oil a Sunday or holiday having been iu port on the previous d-iv and also on the same Sunday or holiday arrives in another port, and sails again 'the same day, are the workers under tho award cntitlod lo be paid twn minimum?, viz., 3s. under Clause M, and ■Is. or :is.. as the case may bo, under Clause !>•" ■ . . . . The Court's answer is: Ihe provisions of anuses 9 and 1-t of the award are separate and distinrt, and, in the circumstances stated, the members of tho nrnvidorn department are entitled to bo paid the minimum fixed by Clause It, and also the maximum fixed by Clause 9." .
