EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of tho Wnllington I'iducation lio:ml was held yesterday, there boing present: Jfr. K. Lcc (chairman), and Alessrs. J. O. W. Aitkeu, Win. Allan, A. H. Vile, W. G. Buchanan, M.l\, 11. KUlcr, A. W. Hogg, JM'., and J. Kebbcll.

The statement of finances disclosed a debit balance of <E1575 7s. 10(1., as againi-t a crodit balance of .C 1427 4s. Cd. shown for the previous month. Payments fcince the last hoard meeting totalled .£3155 Ids. 6d., while the total authorisations amounted to .£-157:2 ss.

A grant of £M was received from tho Government for a school at Tablelands, and also another of .£275 for the teachers' Saturday classes.

A recommendation from tho householders' meeting at Northland, to the effect that the scope of education boards should be widened to include all schools, was read, and it was agreed that the fame should bo forwarded, without comment, to tho Minister for Education.

A letter from the Otago Education Hoard, covering a suggestion that the Wellington Board should support a proposal that tho Education Department should assist, by some system, of correspondence classes, uncertificated teachers to qualify themselves by examination, was refem/J to the inspectors for report. A suggestion from the South Canterbury Education Board that Government subsidies should be paid on donations to the funds of all schools .was referred to tho Finance iCommittee.

The resignations of Miss 0. Simmons (Ilukamii), Miss E. Bannister (Hastwell), and Miss ,G. Eoss (Hineinoa) were accepted.

'Mr. G. G. Watson, was anpointed lieutenant in No. 1 Company," South Wellington Junior Cadets. Hie thanks of the board were, by resolution, accorded the Greytown Trust Lands Irust for a donation of .£4O for the local District High School, and to the Masterton A. and P. Society for donations of one guinea to each of ten schools, for the encouragement of agricultural teaching. GRANTS TO SCHOOLS. Grants for works and supplies were authorised for tho schools at Mitchelltown (channelling), Pahiatua (fencing), Dreyer's Kock (stovepipe), Mangamahoe (extra tank), Paakaktinri (rebuilding copper, chimney, etc.), Alfredton (doormat, etc.), Matarawa (fencing and general repairs to tho residence), Kopuaranga (repairs), )Vadestown (heating stove), Kilbirme (gas in new rooms), -Training College (new halyards and painting flagpole). 1 Applications for grants for Horoeka, Pahiatua (drainage and water for residence), Opaki and Kopuaranga (shed for residence), were declined.

The clerk of works was instructed to report on the following applications:— Carterton (renewal .of wire lencing), Alfredton (fencing), Epiini (drainage). Library subsidies lor Kaipara (£1 2s. Cd.), and Ihuraua (13s. Gd.), were granted. The clerk of works was instructed to advise the South Wellington School Committee regarding the school grounds.

Various matters regarding the follow ing school sites were dealt with:—

Nonnnndale—School to be erected ou the site already vested in the board. JohnEonville —Old site to be resurveyed, with a view to laying it out in sections with ■iflft. frontage, except the section on which stands the old school. Kaiparoro—Present site and addition thereto tor residence to Ijo surveyed. Terrace (Buller trustees)— The board decided that it is inadvisable at present to sell any portion of the Clifton Terrace frontage. Ihuraua—Notice re fencing agreed to. Estimate of fencing unoccupied reserve to be obtained. Tablelands—Settlers to be requested to provide the minimum area of three acres, l'liramerton—Authority to be given to tender for allotments 35, 36, and 37, Native reserve subdivision.

It was also resolved, with regard to the following:—

Kent to Industrial Association—The inquiry of the Auditor-General to bo transmitted to the. Director of the Technical School, together with a copy of the opinion of the board's solicitor, with the intimation that, in view of the legal position,, payment! of rent must cease. Woodwork—South Wellington Centre: That circular saw and motor be provided. Mount Cook Centre: That necessary electric wiring be undertaken, and glue-pot provided. Petonc (grading)— That the board visit and inspect. Upper Hutt—That application bo made to the Railway Department for supply of water. Tauhcrjuikau—That the committee be informed that the application, with others, has already been made for a bathroom for the teacher's residence, but that, as yet, no grant has been made. Pahautaiiui —That the new gate and fencing repairs bo undertaken (inspector's recommendation). Rongokokako—That separate capitations bo paid for the two buildings during temporary occupancy. The following tenders were accepted:— (a) Stationery—Whitcombe and Tombs, .£39 4s. Cd.; i'b) printing—Turnbull, Hickson, and Gooder, .£73 11s.; (c) Scarborough -gates-H. 11. Godfrey, M'l; (A) fire screens—Foglie and Copp, 9s. On the motion of Mr. Hogg, the board s previous resolution, declining an application i'or an installation of gas at the teacher's residence at Greytown, wits rescinded. >The same course was adopted (ou the motion of Mr. Kebbell) with regard to a gas installation at Levin. TRAINING COLLEGE. On the recommendation of the Committee of Advice of the Training College, the board resolved: That the unallotted salary at .£9O be used to provide'assistance for the Secondary Department, where, hitherto, there have been two teachers; and that the engagement 1)0 left to the chairman, the chief inspector, and the principal. The allocation of .C3OO for additional subjects was distributed as follow:— Drawing and handwork, .£G9; singing, .£SO • woodwork, #25; librarian and library, .£2O; lectures-hygiene and physiolo"V i£lo 10s.; instructor in domestic science =£60; lantern slides, .£5; incidental expenses, £W 10s.; total, .£3OO. The board decided to obtain the services of an instructor in domestic scienco v at a salary of ,£220 per annum.
