A portion of tho city has been thrown into darkness owing to tho inexperienced stokers engaged in ibc placo of strikers being imablo to maintain a proper supply of gas. (Rcc. May 27, 0.10 a.m.) Owing to tho failure of the supjdy, thousands of hands employed in factories and establishments relying on gas power were unable to resuino work.
The Coal Workers' Lighters' Union has agreed not to carry coal for'tho gasworks.
A trades' union deputation has asked the Premier, Mr. Denliam, to intervene.
Mr. Denham replied fiat tlwre was no causo for intervention. The company had done nothing contrary to law. Ho would, however, do his utmost to bring about a conference, atid would appoint an arbitrator if botli sicks were agreeable. AUSTRALIAN REFERENDA. THE FINAL FIGURES. No. First Issue 483,414 742,673 Second Issuo 488,020 736,363 Majority against first issue... 259,259 Majority against second issuo 247,737 Altogether 1905 informal votes were east.
