HASTINGS NOTES.
On Wednesday a deputation.of 35 representative citizens waited upon Mr. George Nelson at Port Ahuriri with tho request that he should accept nomination as a candidate for the Napier seat at the next Parliamentary elections. In acceding to the request, Jlr. Nelson said that ho !was not going to stand under any false colours. If I stand, said he. 1 will stand as an Independent Liberal. 1 will no t tie myself to any party. Continuing, Jlr. Nelson said that his endeavour would bo to work in with the Government, but if he ascertained that it was impossible to do that with credit to his conscience, then ho might decide upon a different course. Ho would endeavour to work with the Government till he had reason for doing otherwise. "Finally," said Jlr. Nelson, "if I get into Parliament, my retaining that position will not have to depend upon Hie number of railway stations and post offices I get. 'Rather than spend money on railway stations and post offices, I would prefer to see money used for roads and bridges." Mr. Nelson here referred to a new railway station for Napier, which, he said, had been mooted for some time, and said that to him it did not a.ppear to be necessary at present.
