PERSIFLAGE AT MIRAMAR.

GRANT TO THE MAYOR. Last evening tho Miramar Borough Council considered—not very seriously— the question,of paying its Mayor an annual' honorarium. The subjeot was introduced by tic following letter from Mr. G. \V. Houchen:— "Seeing in to-night's paper that the 'Mayor of Onslow lias been granted im honorarium, might 1 suggest that our present Mayor bo granted one alsoP Petono and other boroughs have, a slated honorarium for their Mayors, and I think that, in a progressive borough liko ours,, something timilar might be done. His Worship has lo put a lot of time into tho affairs of Miramar, and also little expenses in his work have to bo home by Him. Therefore I would respectfully suggest to the council that our Mayor be granted an annual honorarium of, say, '.£ls or-more, according to the finances of tho borough." . , "Well, gentlemen, remarked tlio Mayor, "if you want to discuss this I will go out of tho room." Councillor Bell thought that tho matter should be referred to the Finance Committee. Councillor Richards remarked that there was a "ciTtnin amount of equity" in tho proposal, but, personally, ho did not think that mayors should look for that sort of "/'don't think they do," said another councillor. "I think we got better men as volunteers," continued Councillor Richards, "and we get better service." "That's it," commented Councillor Laurenso'n; "we keep tho bunch of carrots steadily in view." Councillor Richard*: "If I wcro a mayor I might have other views upon tho subject." "We will bo a council headed by a patriotic Mayor," said Councillor 8011. "Wo have always been very well swvod in tho past," concluded Councillor Kieh- ' At' that tho discussion dropped. Tho clerk was instructed to notify Mr. Houchon that tho proposal raised in his letter would receive consideration.
