0 • HONOUR FOR MR. A. R. HISLOP. The Institute of Marine Engineers has received intimation by the San Francisco mail that Mr. A. K. Hislop (secretary, for the institute in this Dominion) has had the honour conferred upon him of having been elected a vice-president of the Institute of' Marine Engineers of Great Britain, the president of -which (the Bight Hon. Lord Pirrie, head of the firm of Uarland and Wolffe) was decorated at the Hotel Cecil in London in 1907 in the presence of a brilliant gathering (including Kir James Mills, of Dunedin) with the gold emblem of New Zealand. This is the second occasion upon which • New Zealand has been singled out for this honour, the former being when the late Mr. Scddon visited London in connection with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, when he decorated Sir Jontiseno' Flanney with the emblem of New Zealand. The Institute of Great Britain includes the greatest engineers and shipbuilders of the Old World on its register, and such captains of industry as Lord Strathcona, the late Lord Kelvin, Sir William White, Mr. Beldam, Colonel John Denny, Mr. James, Denny, and many others have occupied the presidential chair.
