LOCAL AND GENERAL.
It is stated on the authority of Mr. W. H. yield, M.P., that Hie Minister for Railways does not intend to authorise the running of the Mauawatu trains to and from the Lainbton Station. Tho reason given is that the plans for the central railway station aro well advanced, and that in a little while the 'new building will bo commenced.
With reference to the editorial note published in yesterday's issue commenting on the one-sided report sent out by the Press Association of the final day's proceedings of the Macdonald case, wc are informed that this report was sent out by tho head office and not by the local sub-agents. The omission to «end Mr. Blair's reply to Macdonald's affidavit was, we are informed, due to an oversight.
Mr. Holmes, the local secretary, has received word that tho conclusion of tho ten days' campaign held by the Y.M.C.A. in Wangauui took place on Saturday night last. The result is another testimony of the value of the modern Y.M.C.A. in a city. The total amount received was as follows:—Site, iMSOD; building, JE3SIG 17s. 4d.; administration, ,£750; total, JE6OOG 17s. id Tho committee are .still going ,ihead to secure tho .£5llOO for the building.
Last evening Detectives Kemp and Hammond 'arrested a man, who will appear at the Magistrate's Court this morning charged with theft from the person of the amount of .£l3.

' Mr. W. F. Howlctt writes complaining: that for years past when he has directed attention to gross acts of stupidity on tho part of Post Office officials the superiors of tho offending official have "screened" him, either by pretending to misunderstand or by evasion, or by an untruth. Even when he has pursued tho matter to headquarters, he has met witli no greater success. He adds:—-"When I heard we had a new Postmastcr-Goiwral, I wrote liihi on -May 6:—'lf I submit a gross case of a clerk deliberately lying, and his suporior knowingly shielding him, will you give the matter a fair hearing, and deal with tho oll'cnder, no matter what his rank in the service may be?'
