Bachelors' Ball at Tokomaru. A very enjoyable evening was spent at tho Tokomaru Town Hall on Friday evening, when local bachelors gave their annual ball. Some 70 or 80 couples danced to the inusi'". of Mr. P. C. Hanky's band. Tho catering was in the hands of Mr. Dustin, of Palmerstou. Visitors were prosent from Palmerston North, Linton, I'oxton, Moutoa, Shannon, and Wellington. "Extras" were played by Miss SI. M'Kenzie, and also by Miss Judd. Thompson, Dalziel, Uggiiis, Do Bcurbel, Jago, and others. A Kitchen Tea. ■Miss Ada Greenwood was the guest of honour at a largo and very pleasant kitchen tea, given by Mrs. C. E. Adams and her sister, Miss T. Jacobson, on haturday at the Hutt. The -rooms were, gay with autumn flowers, and the warm glow of the electric heaters made them cheery and bright after the cold and ram outside. Tea was served in tho dining room. An interesting competition took place m th* drawing room, and the hall was 'reserved for music. The time passed so pleasantlv that it was long after six o'clock before tho gathering broke up. The array of useful gifts must have been pleasing 'to the bride-elect. Death of Mrs. Kent-Johnston. .j-,. The many friends of Mr. C. Kent-Joh'h-ston, of Featherston, and Mr. J. S. KentJohnston, of Grey town, will regret, to learn-that-they received word on J. bursday of the death of their mother at Melmurne after a short illness. The late Mrs. Kent-Johnston, who was in her Mvcnty-second year, was the relict of-the late Colonel J. Kent-Johnston, C. and V. Staff, England, who pre-deceased his wife by some years. A grown-up family, consisting of Mr. A. G. Kent-Johnston, London (Enslaud). Mr. J. S. Kent-Johnston, Greytown, Mr. C. Kent-Johnston, Featherston, and Miss Alice Kent-Johnston, who was living with her mother in Melbourne, survive her. About three years ago, Mrs. Kent-Johnston came over on a visit to her sons in Greytown and Featherston. Mrs. Thompson, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. F. K. do Castro, of Talavera Terrace, has returned to Otaki.. Miss Mary Wilson, Botanical Road, who has been spending three months visiting various friends in Palmerston North and the adiacent townships, among them being Mrs. il. B. Tucker, at tho" Club Hotel, Palmerston, intends spending a few days at Mr. and Mrs. W. Crichton's house at Titahi Bay, returning with them to Wellington, where she will spend tho winter. The engagement is announced of Miss Miles, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Miles, Hobson Street, to Mr. W. Handyside, eldest son of Mr. J. S. Handy-side,-of Hawke's.Bajv Mr. and Mrs. Nesbitt (London) are tourin" tho Dominion, and at present are in Wellington, staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. Julius, wife of Bishop Julius, is slowly recovering from her recent accident, though she is still too weak to be removed from Timaru to her homo in Christchurch. Mrs. Bruce Speedy, who has been spending a few' days in town, returned to her home in Featherston on Saturday.
