FROM PERTH TO SYDNEY.
& OVEBLAND CYCLE BIDE. F. White, who left Fremantlo at 6, a.m. on April 4 to endeavour to lower F. ; Biitles's overland cycle record to Syd-' ney, succeeded in his task, but by a very, small margin, for a ride of this description. White arrived in Sydney on Wednesday, May 10, at 9.3 p.m.. his'time for tho trip (about 3350 miles) being 36, days 13 hours 3 minutes, as against Birtles'a 30 days 17 hours. At/Adelaide it looked as if White would fail, but he was coached and paced from there to Sydney (1100 miles), and this gave him tlio re-' cord. Had White conic through unpaced from Adelaide he must have failed. White, for a new rider, showed grit, ami lie deserves every praise. Birtlcs states that, as soon as he has returned from his kineniatograph picture expedition into Central Australia, lie will make an attempt ou tho, new figures, which lie is confident he can'reduce to 30 days. This seems a big cut, but Birlles had just recovered from a severe attack of fever when he left Perth on his record ride, which was tacked on to the end of a gruelling 10,500 miles trip around Australia, unci, further,, as ho knocked soino days off the previous record, there was no great need to force matters' at tho finish. In view of Birtles's statement, his next attempt will bo watched with interest.
Tlio Now South Wales Motor Cycle Club has decided to offer a gold medal to any amateur motor cyclist who establishes a continuous riding record between Melbourne and Sydney (575 miles). There has, so far, only been one attempt to establish a motor cycle record between tlio two capitals, and that failed through the rider falling and smashing his machine, but it is believed that there will bo, several attempts made both by Sydney and' Melbourne motor cyclists next spring;. The fastest tiino yet recorded over this route—but not continuous, a section being covered in consecutivo days—is about 25 hours, recorded in the Melbourne-Sydney rteliability Motor Cycle Contest, held last Christmas. A straight-out run over this course is an entirely different matter, ami once that will prove a severe ordeal for the toughest of our motor spcedmen. Tlio motor-car record is lOhr. !7miii., estate lished in April, 1010, by tho. Adelaido motorist, Mr. G. G. White.
