A WOMAN DISAPPEARS,
Wanganu), May 22. Mrs. Melville, '■ about 26 years of ag<\ wife of a tailor, residing at Eastown. disappeared on .Saturday, and has not been seen since. She left a note saying goodbye, as she could not stand worry any longer. The wax portion of a box ot matches was found in tho kitchen, and it is feared (hat the unfortunate woman lia» committed suicide. ■ Two children, 13 months and three years old, were left ou the verandah. The mother (old them 6lw was going to bring lliem lollies. CRIMINAL SESSIONS. Auckland, May 22. Tho Supreme Court criminal sessions opened to-day. Mr. Justice Chapman'ir his charge to tho Grand Jury referred to tho largo numbsr of cases, 25 bills being presented. Ho said no doubt tho larger proportion of the criminal cases'in Auckland, compared with tho other centres, was duo to tho greater population. Ho commented favourably on tho absenco of sexual cases. Frank Stokes, alias Tozer, for forgery and uttering,' was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment and three years' reformatory treatment., Hapo Tanara, alias King, for forgery and uttering, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and declared a habitual criminal. WINTER EXHIBITION. Auckland, May 22. The Auckland Winter Exhibition was opened this afternoon by the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, Minister for Agriculture. Tho exhibition, which will last over the whol« week, is the biggest of the kind yet held iu Auckland, the catalogue showing over 780 entries in the competitive classes, while over 100 industrial exhibits ara made in the non-competitive section. CHURCH CORPS NOT FAVOURED. Duncdin, May 22. At a. meeting of the Council of Churches to-night a motion was approved to the effect that, while deeply appreciating the oil'er to form church companies of cadets- and nominate officers thereto, tho council is of opinion that tho churches, as such, should take no part in tho forma* tion of cadet companies. WOMAN'S PLIGHT-TWICE LOST. New Plymouth, luay 22. The "Herald's" Rerekapa correspondent reports that Mrs. Scliultz, who lives alono at tho junction of Makarakia and Moki Roads, was found by Mr. Baby on Saturday morning in tho bush, and removed to Mr. J. Hutchen's house. On Sunday, at midday, she left for lier home, but, apparently, lost her way, for this morning it was reported that she had been found last night at midnight, and removed to a fencers' camp. The police have bceu communicated with. TWO POLLS ANNULLED. Christchurch, May 22. Two disputed polls iu connection with tho recent Harbour Board elections wero the subject of a magisterial inquiry. Objections were lodged by Paparua and Waimairi counties on the ground that plural voting had been allowed. Both polls wero declared void, and tho returning officers wero ordered to pay advertising costs. NORTH AUCKLAND RAILWAY. Duncdin, May 22. The Minister for Public. Works has received tho report of the North Auckland Railway Commission. Tho report endorses' his action in ordering a deviation of the lino to tho westward. PETONE, S.S., OVERDUE. Oamaru, May 22a The steamer Petone, which was due at Oamaru on Thursday last from Newcastle with coal, has not yet put in an appearance. It is surmised she is sheltering. UNPRECEDENTED. 1 Reefton, May 22. . A great spell of dry frosty weather is being experienced. No rain fell this month, and the sources of water supply, for Reefton have been frozen.
