NEW ZEALAND LABOUR PARTY
A PEOPOSED CITY BY-LAW. A meeting of tho Wellington branch' of tho New Zealand Labour party was held in tho Wellington Trades Hall last evening, Mr. D. M'Lareu, JI.P., presiding. The business dealt with was consideration of the report of the party's conference, held last Easter, at Christchurch. The details of tho report were submitted by tho chairman and supplemented by Mr. Hampton, co-delegato to tho conference. In accordance with the recommendation of tho conference the branch proceeded to tho selection of a committee of seven members which should act as a National Executive for the time being. Out of some twelve nominat'.ons the following were- elected:—Messrs. D. M'Laren, M.P., L. Roardon, W. H. Hampton, Thomas Smith, J. W. Kay, W. T. Young, and l> , . Cornwall. The National Executive, according to instructions, is to make a compilation of tho rules, constitution, platform, and plans of organisation and other matters for guidance of the branches and this will |)o circulated in book form amongst tho members. Correspondence was received from the various branches in other parts of the Dominion indicative of good progress being made therein. Tho conference report was adopted and arrangements were made for regular meetings of the National Executive.
In a short address to the members nt tho close of tho mooring tho chairman pointed out the need for alertness iu regard to public affairs in as much as it was being represented that a by-law' which would come before- the City Council to-night was of tho nature of an antfshini by-law, whereas (ho by-law (which. was before him on Ihe table) was a proposal to reduce the air-space required for building purposes throughout the wholo of Greater Wellington to the extent of what is known as "the old Wellington ward." Tho present by-law covering all districts outside Wellington waul requires 1!000 feet superficial area of nirspaco and the amended by-law to bo submitted proposes to cut down that amount to lflOOil. Them was (treat danger lying in tho people being apathetic and' tho party should sen to it that such things were not allowed to pass without strong protest.
