He pleaded that he did not; know the- marriage wns within (lie prohibited degrees. Accused, who is 20 years of age, and has passed Hie Sixth Standard of the State schools, declares that ho was ignorant, of any law proven!ing marriage even with a sisler. Counsel made tlio pnint that the only list ni prohibited degrees open to the public was in Ibo Anglican Prayer-book, iho jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
STEAM TRADE INTERRUPTED. . A GALE OX THE COAST. Gisborne, May 18. A heavy southerly gale is raging along (he Last Coast, with a high sea. The. llnuroto was able, to embark nnd disembark passengers successfully at Gisborne this morning, but will bo unable (o^ call at Tokomaiu Hay. The Victoria, which 'will bo late- arriving here, is not expected to work that bay. The Squall, for tho fourth successive occasion, is having a long trip from Auckland. She is probably sheltering in. the Bay of Plenty. The New Zealand Shipping Company's Eotorua was due at Tokomaru oil Monday to lift a cargo of meat, but so far she has not put in an appearance thpro, and probably she will not bo ablo te work there for several days. FIRST STONE OF NEW CHURCH. GENEKOUS DONATIONS. Grcymouth, May 17. This afternoon a great crowd assembled fo witness tho laving of the foundation stone of the new Presbyterian Clnrrcli by tho I?cv. .John M'Konzie, of 'Christchurch. The building was designed by Messrs. Salmond and Vaiues, architects, Dun. edin, and is to be built in brick. The. ceremony was attended by leading citK zens, and all ministers of religion in the district tvero present. A large choir ren. dered anthems, and the Sunday School children sang hymns. Close on" .£SOO in donations was laid on the foundation stc'no. Tho Itev. M'Kenzio is being entertained at a "social" to-night.
TECHNICAL SCHOOL COMPULSORY,
Wanganui, May 18. llio Wanganiii Education Board this ovcning decided to take steps to put into force Section 18 of the Education Amendment Act of last session providing for compulsory attendance at the Technical School. Tho regulations required are to bo prepared for next meeting.
THE HOME RULE MEN. Napier, May 17.. Mr. Hazelton, the Irish Homo Rule delegate, was accorded a public reception to-day, and welcomed by the Mayoi (Mr. Vigor Brown, M.l\). To-night Mr. Hazelton addressed a largo meeting in tho Theatre Royal. It was announced that a sum approximating ,£2OO had been collected in this district.
LANCASTER PARK. Christchurch, May 17. Tho Cricket Association and tho Rugby Union last night at general meetings both approved a. provisional agreement between tho committees of these bodies for tho coutrpl of Lancaster Park, the well-known sports ground. Each body will contribute I'IOOO to tho improvement fund. A new board of control was created with equal representation of football and cricket interests. Very extensive alterations to the ground are contemplated.
BRIEF MENTION. Duncdin, May 17. Neil William Nicholson was acquitted on a charge of stealing water from the Scandinavian Company's water-raco at SU Bathons.
