Mr. Hazelton, M.l 1 ., one of the Irish Envoys, motored from l'alnierslon North to Shannon, accompanied by members ol his Palinorslon North committee on Saturday afternoon. The. route was via Foxton, where Mr. Hazelton briefly addressed a number of local resident-. The meeting, whicli was held in the Druids' Hall, was at first only poorly attended, but, later in the evening, the hall filled up.. A number ot residents of I'oston, Levin, Tokomarii, and tho surrounding district attended. The chairman, Mr. W. 11. Field, M.l\, briefly introduced Mr. Hazelton. Mr. Hazelton, wlio was very cordially received, spoke on the lines of his Ralmerston North address. Ills remarks were frequently punctuated by rounds of annlause. At the conclusion of his address, a collection in aid oi tho funds of the Nationalist party was taken up, duriu;' which Mrs. Daltdu, af Wellington, played Irish and Scotch selections. After the lecturer had answered a number of questions, tho following resolution was moved bv Mr. Selby:—"that this meeting of residents ot Shannon and district is of opinion that, m tho best interests of the Rood government of tho Empire, Home Rule, or tho right to make laws for their own government, should be accorded the people ot Ireland." Mr. H. Logan recondetl tho motion, and referred to the )ar"o measure of support accorded Home Rule !i, y '110I 10 at Home. Mr. i '\ ','.• >'?nu spoke in support of the resolution, but condemned the revolutionary tactics of a section of Home Kule sympathisers in tho 'eighties, and praising tho conciliatory methods of the presentday Nationalist party, Mr. Hurlev. ialmerston North, also spoke at considerable length in support of the motion, ■there were no dissentients when tho mo ion was put, and it was carried bv acclamation Mr. P. Hene:«y, of Foxron, proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Hazelton. and tho motion was seconded uy Mr. ti. N. Stephenson. Three cheers wore then given lor (he speaker of tho evening, and tho proceedings closed with tho singing of tho National Anthem. The following were on the platform :-Messrs. I. Hencssy (Foxton), Hurley and Dcvine (lalmerston North), J. Malcolm (Levin), Councillors F. W/Venn and G. N. Stephenson, Messrs. J. Mitchell, M. Moynilum, H. Logan, and Father Kelly. CARTERTON. A meeting of the recently-formed golf club was held on Saturday, when some lit teen new members were elected. It was decided to engage Mr. A. R. Hadfield to prepare the links for tho opening on Saturday next. Three rollers are to be procured for use on the links. On Sunday afternoon the band visited the Hikurangi College, Clarcville, and gave a second programme. The Rev. C. Armstrong, son of Mrs. P. J. Armstrong, of Carterton, who has ioi some time been stationed at Walgctt, New South Hales, has been promoted to tho charge ol a larger district at Grafton. HASTINGS. •M T . he two local schools (Hastings and Mahara) which have been closed down lor a fortnight on account of scarlatina, wcro re-opened yesterday. A new skating'rink is to bo opened in Karamu Road shortly. Considerable interest: is being taken in tho election of members for tho Hawke's Bay River Board, which is being set up with a view to protecting the districts that were Hooded last July from similar mischance in the, future. There are diverse interests affected by tho proposed proteciivo works and, consequently, a good deal of animation is being shown by tho candidates in some of tlio wards', the Hon. J. D.
