SERVICE AT SEA.
LETTER TO DEFENCE MINISTER, The following letter has been addressed io the Acting-Minister for Defeuco by Mr. Cecil W. Palmer, local secretary lor the Navy League:— "Sir,—l beg to say that various inquiries have been mode at my office (and by letter) as to whether boys and young men employed in the ceastal mercantile marine- could not be allowed to do their training on board a man-of-war or on the Aniokura, in lieu of service ashore. Tho idea of serving at sea also appears tp 'bo popular among a large number of young men aud boys of other callings. From the Navy League's point of view, it is highly desirable that their wishes should, if practicable, be given effect to. It is understood that, in other, countries in which compulsory training is in vogue, it is usual to accept nominations for Army and the Navy on 'a pro rata basis. Might I ask whether the matter of serving at sea has yet been under consideration i"
