BEEF ON THE RISE.
SOUTH WANTS BIG SUPPLIES Somo two months' ago it was announced tiiat beef would probably realise very lush'prices'during the winter as tho result of the forced thinning out of tho herds in both islands owing to tho autumn drought. ' It is now understood that a riso in price is to take place almost immediately, consequent upon tho demand for stock from the south, where in certain districts the drought has caused a clean sweep. Beef is not cheap at present. Tho cash prices now being charged are as follow:— Sirloin, 7d. lb.; prime ribs, 5d.; rump steak, Sd.j beef steak, Gd. It is anticipated that rump steak will reach doublo figures before the winter is over. A few days afro it was noted that the conditions of the butchering trade at present wcro such that some of thoseengaged in it were not disposed to carry on under them, Recently the hours of the men were cut down by four, and this, in conjunction with tho high price of stock, has had a marked effect on several old-established businesses. Another city business—the llorowhenua Farmers' Meat Company-situated in Cuha Street, on tho corner opposite Veitch and Allan's, closed its doors for business yesterday. This shop was formerly Wilton's, then Whitworth's, tho Otago Meat Company, and latterly it was known by the name above-mentioned.
