11. •, Some exceedingly promising work in oil is shown lit tlio Arts Club inhibition by E. U. Hood, whoso drawing and method are distinctly good. Mr. Hood is evidently possessed of u discriminating appreciation 01 colour value, which, together with effective arrangement, is particularly noticeable in his "Alteration."

One is pleased to see again the work of W. I''. Palmer. Oho of tno finest bits' of foreground in' the gallery, is in his "Wellington Heads.'- ■Tiicro-'is ah admirable decision' about Mr. Palmer's treatment of the tangle of native grasses'-and scrub which is'delightful,. ' Miss Carte's little'study in Newtown Park; is in good 'feeling .and strong method; ■■_ ■ • " • -■. '' Some nice clean'water colours aro sen); by Noel B'arraud, whose "Sheep Track" is a very charming impression in delicate colour. One regrets to find catalogued only one water colour from the brush of Mrs. Tripe, whoso "Pastoral" is full of atmospheric feeling, admirable drawing and good colour, tlie treatment of the . foreground being, specially good. Miss R. W. Richmond's "Poplars" is sound in drawing and sweet in colour. There are two very strongly-treated landscapes in water colour by Miss Jessie Newton, and a charming little view in the Hutt Valley by Miss Ina Lee. Miss May Lingard's best oil is her. "Asters," in which she has evolved a pleasant scheme out of a somewhat darine riot of colour. The president of the club is represented by one oil, a "Nocturne," which shows careful and conscientious work on an' ambitious subject in the treatment of which Mr. Rayward has not been entirely unsuccessful, though better work has been shown from bis easel. in eddilion to the examples which have been individually referred to thero .is much other good work and many pleasing nietnres, including examples 'by Baldwin Warne. Miss Durrani, Mr. 11. M. Gore, and Mr. W. Leslie. An interesting feature of the exhibition is a group of three photographs representing n recent dcv»linment in colour photoprnnhy by P.. Warner. The" oxhibitbn, which is beinf visited by a largo numl-er of art, lovers, is to remain open another ten days.
