GOOD WORK AT WANGANUL (By TolcKraph.-SDcdM Correspondent.! Wanoanui, May 7. Every astronomical institution in the world is distinguished by its own special' ty iu research work. That oi tho Waliganui Aslrunoniiral Society is tlio discovery and cataloguing of double stars, but tho modesty of the director, Mr. Ward, and his helpers is such thut even in Wanganui the ureal amount of wotk done in this direction is almost miknown, though from time to timo it has 'icon favourably comments! on by astronomical journals in other parts of tho world. A short time ago Mr. H. T. limvs. KH.A.S., of the Transvaal Observatory, undertook to verify Ilio Wangamii (Society's work and check its meusuriv menh, and by lust mail ho sent (he rvsuit of his examination, which shows that tho Wanganui Ob.'orvatory is to bo credited with the discovery of no fewer than 102 linu" double ttars.
Apropos of astronomy, Mr. C. W. B.ibbage, president, of this local society, has just received n letter from Kngland from his uncle, Major-Onernl Cabbage, utaling that he has just completed the construction of n calculating ongino originally invented by his father, which will bo of immense assistance to aslronomers in their calculations. The engine, which i» the result of many years of arduous labour, will bo on view at the Coronation Exhibition.
