CITY WORKS.
STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR. The Mayor, addressing the City Council yesterday, prefaced a statement about works, in progress and in prosppct, with the remark that Wellington was the cleanest and healthiest city in Now Zealand. It was admitted by most municipalities, said Mr. Wiiford, that in its sewage and sanitation arrangements WelHiißton afforded an example for any part cf Australasia to copy. The local sewage system was not yet complete, but tho engineer had not lost sight of the possibility iif carrying it (0 a conclusion. As thing's stood, Wellington had the lowest deathrate of any Dominion city. Pipes for reticulation had already been laid south and west of Xcwtown Park, and reservoirs for both areas were ready. Certain works remained to bp done at AYadestown, but it was only a matter of a very short tima before tne areas named would have a sat isfactnry water service. Pipes for the Wninui-o-maia main would arrive next mouth, so that the duplicaticii works would start almost: immediately. Plans for tramway work in Post O'ffieo Squais were noWawaitiiiß approval bv the Government. As soon as the Government's consent. was received, the work would be gone on with without any delay.
