THE CORONATION EXHIBITION.
TRAMWAY EXTENSION. A meeting of the Building and Lighting Committee of the Coronation New Zealand Industrial Exhibition was held at (he office of the secretary (Jlr. H. F. Allen) yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. Bailin-'cr, commissioner, in the chair. It was reported that arrangements had-been made to erect an escape iram the sports floor of "J" store on the. wharf sine, instead of on the street side, so that there can bo no confusion with the escape from the gallery of the Concert Hall, which' is to extend over the railway track in Waterloo Quay. The remainder of the timber to bo used in fitting up the stores for exhibition purposes left Havelock yesterday, and will arrive here this morning. There had been further applications for space, but anart from the gallery there is none available. The sGcrelary reported that he had heard that it. was doubtful if the tramways .could he extended down Customhouse Quay in time for (hp Exhibition. The chairman said that lie understood from Jlr. Jlorton that tho work could be done in time if they could get the Order-in-Couiicil. It was to the advantage of tho.eity to push on with this extension, for if they were going to do it at all, why not take advantage of the traffic that would surely arise from the Exhibition ? Tho secretary was instructed to ascertain if the Order-in-Council had been issued, and if not what was delaying the formality, and to ask that the work bo pushed on with as quickly as possible, so that the track winilil be ready a little after the opening, if not by that date (May -11). Application is also to be. made for fire suppression appliances not in use by (he brigade for the Exhibition, and for free water for exhibitors. Exhibitors, having bonked space, are advised that ".1" store will be available for stall-building from to-morrow on obtaining the necessary permits from the secretary. In connection with this store, .Mr. liallinger said a word of praise was due to the manager of the Ncucliatel Asphalt Company for the manner in which lie had hurried on with his work to oblige tho committee. The offer of Messrs. T. Ballinger and' Company, to loan certain plumbing material, such as sheet-iron and iron pipes (for rails) was accepted with thanks. The same firm wrote offering to erect three electric clocks in different parts of the buildings, provisionally on the power and light being supplied, and permission being given to place a placard beside the clocks, stating by whom they were installed and where they could bu purchased. The offer was accepted. The chairman reported that no further advice had been received from the Wellington branch of the New Zealand "Underwriters' Association as to a reduction in tho premium quoted on the building and for exhibits. Jlontion was made" of another offer of cover, which is likely to develop into a deal a little later.
