WHARF LABOURERS.
AN AGREEMENT DECLINED. MR. HUGHES THREATENS TO RESIGN. By Telesraph—Press Association—CojjyriEht Sydnsy,. April 28. The wharf labourers have declined to accept an agreement with the Steamship Owners' Federation, which was prepared by the executive of the Waterside Worker's' Union. It is stated that the agreement contained the best sot of working conditions ever offered, but the clause agreeing to handle all descriptions of merchandise was strongly objected to, and members voted against it, being desirous to pick and choose their work.' Mr. Hughes (Acting-Federal Prime Minister), who is general secretary of the union, is disappointed and threatens to resign. SERIOUS TROUBLE THREATENED, • (Roc. April 29, 1.5 a.m.) Sydney, April 28. ' Serious trouble is threatened in connection with tho wharf labourers' agreement. The shipowners have decided to ask permanent hands to load cement. If they refuse, freo labour will be employed. The new arrangement comes into operation on Monday. A general cessation of work on the wharves is considered not improbable.
