"GIVE US A STATE FARM!"
■ USUAL NEBULOUS REPLY. The Hon. T. Mackenzie,, replying to \ deputation from tho Waimato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, asking that air experiment farm should •be established in South Canterbury, ■said that he was entirely sympathetic. 'It was a matter of necessity. At the present- time, however, until his staff was strengthened, ho could not recommend anything definite. Ho had obtained the sanction of the* Cabinet to employ: one of tho best agricultural scientists available. He would bo one who would originate and direct experiments, and then, they would go ahead. He wished to make it clear that he was not reflecting on the present officers of the Department, but the country had outgrown its existing system of experiments. ■ When they got the director they were looking for, he was sure the Government would not be backward in advancing the best scientific researches. He claimed that the Department had done wonders'in connection with'dairying herds and also in sterilising whey with a view to eradicating tuberculosis from pigs.
